General Music Chat

Music basically gave up on me (or vice-versa) for about 15 years.
I wrote 1 song in that time, and probably picked up my electric guitar 2-3 times, at most. I would play my acoustic, but just going through songbooks and tabs, maybe once a month at most.

Then a combination of things happened in my life, and my muse returned. Songs now come to me inspired by things I read, things I see and experience and feel.

Interesting thought: MUSic >> MUSe - I suspect there is some ancient greek or latin origin for these words!

in your case it could have been spiritual reasons for giving up the guitar for 15 years, but sometimes it's physical reasons ..example Herb Alpert losing his "lip" and not able to play brass instruments.. in my case, it is financial reasons for giving up the muse.. I'd love to get a trust fund check mailed to me each month but I was not fortunate enough to be born in the right family..

Dane, I wasn't born to the right family either! I gave it up for 2 years 1988 & 89 some friends came over in 1990 said they were starting a band. I started playing with them and the rest is history. I quit out of frustration. I was always gone my kids were growing up and I felt like it was time. I sold everything except the acoustic and barely picked it up. During those 2 years I realized if I just applied a little self discipline I could play music and have balance in my life!

Both the idea of the daimon and the idea of the muse come to us from the ancient Greeks, who believed in spirits they called daimones or daimons (known more com-monly today by the variant spelling ‚daemons‛).

They were conceived as intermediate spirits, neither divine nor human but bridging the gap between the two realms, whose function was to mediate the will and messages of the gods to people, and vice versa.

In Hellenistic Rome the word genius, like the Greek daimon, came to refer to spirit beings in general. This also has a direct connection to the word genie, which itself derived from the ancient Persian desert demons known as the djinn (genie).

Thus was born the idea of the personal genius, the individual attendant spirit that accompanies a per-son through life and represents his or her divine intelligence and inbuilt destiny.

Known today as our Higher-Self/Holy Guardian Angel/ etc. the daimon is considered our connection to divine inspiration.

They were/are anthropomorphic goddesses who became the representatives of poetry, the arts and science, and sources of inspiration in Greek mythology.

Plato lists eight muses connected with eight mythical spheres. Hesiod refers to them as 9 daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, who were born in Pieria.

The Friend I wrote about in "The Muse" took a lot of Artists under his wing, and guided them into a meaningful career of art. A few of them I knew, and they went on to become successful in related areas of Art (i.e Commercial). Some others, not so well..

I have an idea if you're interested, the guitar riffs during the vocals, would sound badass if doubled with a sax=sound like how Bowie used on Diamond Dogs.

I'd love to hear this song turned into something majestic, anyway excellent song.

I here ya ETU (majestic) But the intention behind the song really is more'programmatic' (Capturing an ambient Southwest flavor without being a cowboy) ..But I could definitely see (hear) what you mean.. Thanks for the listen, ETU.

Actually..a counter melody even further back and subdued (using a sax) would be interesting...I am taking notes

No no Klugmo we were talking about 'muse" Not "mucous" hee hee

I agree Klugmo, I quit playing for close to 20 years,
and totally stopped playing for 10 of those years.
No loss of a muse, I had 4 kids to raise, and put
thru school. Now I'm empty nested ( even tho my kids
still think they need a allowance every week), and play
all the time. I can barely quit playing to do the jobs tht
I need to do just to get by.

How can you say you weren't born to the right family,
do you see what this says about you, and your own sense
of self worth. I love and am very proud of every member
of my family, and consider myself blessed to be a part
of this family. Dane I don't just get a trust check, I'm the
executor of 2 trusts, so I make all the payments, and all
the trust beneficiaries really love me, ands will call me if
I'm late. To say you weren't born to the right family, is
sorry, those people raised you, they were right.
