well you have to realize he's really referring to the girl scout cookie method.
that's where you try to ingratiate yourself with friends and family then you sell them stuff.
like the old days when the barkeep would give you 200 tickets to your show and if you sold them then you could play at his bar.

besides you have do all that equivocation to get a regular job with some silly self important prick, you have to pretend you like him/her laugh at their stupid jokes and listen to all those boring war stories.

I see this two ways:

First of all, I have to agree with Yod in respect that I certainly question the idea that your Bandmix threads are part of your resume'. Don't get me wrong, there are things that I would look at in terms of a prospective bandmate: a) what kind of experience do they have? b) Do they have music posted-so that I can see an example of what they can do? c) How many posts do they have...that may sound odd, but I wonder how some of these folks have time to seriously work on music when they are on this site so much. I've been here for five years, on and off, and just broke the 1000 post mark. There are some guys who have been here half the time and have 4 times the posts...HOW?

As far as the flaming, politics and all that other crap...I don't believe for a minute that being part of those discussions leads to "professional suicide". I don't take part in them because I really don't care what other people have to say about those subjects. If the point is that I'm looking for band mates, I really couldn't care less if they like Obama or not. It has no relevance, musically. AND, if I was going for a gig, and the venue owner looked me up and didn't agree with my political stance-leading that person to cancel our agreement, I'm probably better off in the long run, if that is the kind of unprofessionalism I would be dealing with.

I've actually been one in the past that has pushed for "music only" topics. That being said, people are people, and they are going to express how they feel about a variety of topics. I think the idea that you damage your career oppurtunities by doing so is kind of silly. I'll agree that the personal flaming and the political rants go too far, but, in the end, i'd be more concerned about a potential employer who doesn't want me to have individual thoughts. That's kinda scary, in a way.

ON THE OTHER HAND, there is a point to which I agree. If I was on the hiring end of that example, and I came across a potential employee on an internet sight, I may be hesitant to hire him or her if I read...oh, hell, there's no subtle way to put it...some of the childish behavior that goes on here. I feel that Yod's statement actually shot his argument in the foot, and it's a primary flaw in the nature of the business itself. Being opinionated and loud mouthed doesn't have a single thing to do with being a musician...it's a personality trait. Everyone from priests to construction workers and beyond can be opinionated and loud mouthed. Carrying a guitar doesn't grant some special right to those "virtues", and the truth-and the point of the OP, is the a pro is going to know when it's time to "let it fly" and when to show some control. I think the original idea was that you should always choose your words carefully on a public forum-you never know who could end up reading them.

To make a long story short (too late), I agree with the OP, but not to the extent that it's wrong to express an opinion.

If the banter offends you then get out of the general discussion area. I doubt very much that anything musicians say on the Internet will have much effect on their playing ability. By they way, musicians get hired for their playing abilities, not for their opinions.
Perhaps I'm the exception. How many of you almost had a job in the bag until they brought out the check list that had: Are you a conservative or a liberal, What is your stand on same sex marriage, do you eat anything on the first lady forbidden food list such as sugar? How do you feel about curly bulbs? And on and on.... Yeah, right. Like that's gunna happen.

Promoters are slimy, they want the $. They don't care what you do as long as you turn in a good show and you remember that you are only as good as your last show.

And if you give up a really shitty show, that might be your last show.
