Susan Boyle’s Breathtaking Performance on Oprah
Singer performs “Who I Was Born to Be,” talks earlier breakdown
Susan Boyle, though officially the highest selling artist of last year, having the most successful debut album of all times, rarely does media interviews, which is why, when it happens, fans are positively ecstatic. The same goes for the audience on the most recent episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, where the Scottish singer was invited to perform and for a short interview, as the New York Daily News can confirm.
The interview was taped last week and aired only the other night, on January 19, at the same time with the Adam Lambert piece. After a brief introduction presenting the singer’s almost magical, Cinderella-like story and a few questions for the members of the audience, Oprah went to introduce Susan to wild applause and cheers. Dressed in a floor-long gown, with her hair swept back and chandelier earrings, Susan Boyle sang “Who I Was Born to Be,” a track written especially for her and included on her debut album “I Dreamed a Dream.”
Useless to say, fans who had already been crying were in tears the first seconds after hearing Susan’s voice. Oprah too appeared to be weeping when the camera zoomed in on her, but that was not the most extraordinary thing about the extraordinary performance, it is being said. At one point, Susan herself seemed to be crying, with one tear streaming down her face. Her voice did not falter for one second though, which only goes to show not only that she is a very accomplished artist but also one that pours her soul into music.
After singing, Susan sat down with Oprah to talk a bit about how life has changed for her this past year and how she’s been dealing with so much media attention. Fame hasn’t changed her much, she says, except in the sense that she can’t go out now and walk about without being recognized almost instantly. Nevertheless, the thought of having sold 8 million copies of her debut album already is absolutely overwhelming, with Susan admitting she is terribly touched by the idea of so many people going out and buying her album – after all, she was, until not long ago, an artist they did not know and whose music could not offer any guarantees.
“Pretty awesome to be recognized in the street and asked for autographs. I’m getting quite a few fan letters and cards from around the globe. I’m loving every second of it. […] It takes a bit of time to take in because it happened so quickly. I’m really enjoying every second of it. It’s like a dream come true,” Susan tells Oprah.
