I love Chris Smither. He's kinda weird, though. A Bonnie Raitt croney, too, so he can't be all bad, right? (He's the guy what wrote "Love Me Like A Man," btw.)

EXCELLENT version of "Memphis In The Meantime!" "Put the cow horns back on the Cadillac & change the message on the code-a-phone!" LOL My goodness what a great bass line in this one!

Hey bob, watcha think of this blues man? I love that rolling style. He doesn't need a backup band. "Crocodile Man."

"Right now I need a Telecaster through a Vibrolux turned up to ten"

Damn! now that's what I call a million $ lyric!

Not so famous is right (I honestly never heard of Smither before) but very cool.

By the way Philby, (while we're on the subject of shitkickin' music),
did ya know that John Fogerty has an excellent new album out playing great 'ol Appalachian mountain tunes? Don't have a link at the moment, but its probably worth buying anyway.

Now this is getting kinda spooky!

I never heard of Chris Smither before, even though he's been around for decades, and today, during lunch break,I heard one of his tunes on the radio! (WNTI is a very cool radio station  )

That IS a hip station, then, HJ!

A friend of mine turned me on to him about 5 years ago. I've been grateful ever since. He's got a wicked style, imo.

I mean that, too - "wicked." Some of his stuff really has this evil little undercurrent to it that makes me sit up & listen. I dunno how to describe it, exactly. Perhaps it's just an understated, yet huge amount of power in his style, in spite of his stripped down productions.

I wish I could find a copy of his version of John Prine's "Killing The Blues" on youtube or somewhere for you to hear, HJ. What an absolutely beautiful piece of music! I don't like his voice much, but the way he presents that tune is truly KILLER! I learned the song, & get a lot of great comments when I play it. I had to stop playing it when my hand went floopy, but I've been working on it lately, & I think I might be able to do it again. (YAY for me! I based my version on his, & though I can't come close to his strange banjo-wee guitar style, I think I do the tune some justice.)

that song was written by john hiatt... another great unknown. He wrote the song jeff healey made famous - 'angel eyes'
the song bonnie rait made famous - ' real fine love'
and a million more.

never liked the bonnie rait version(angel eyes)... then I heard the original and it's now a fav of mine.

I'll check out your guy if you check out my guy (hehe).

not sure why this is relevant but never would have guessed by that voice that he was white!
