The main thing that matters to me on strings are:
Tone quality, then gauge. i love my lights.
4 stringer 100-45 or 95-40
6 stringer (bass still) 130-100-45-32 or 125-100-45-32
For my normal string setup, I like Ernie Ball Slinkys for everyday stuff (40-60-85-105 for 4-string, 40-60-85-105-125 for 5-string). I find the Slinkys to give a great response that works well with many styles of music.
I like Elixirs ok, i guess. I don't like the coating on the strings because I've found that it flakes off over time and makes a mess all over my hands, clothes, and basses. However, I do like that the coated strings stay bright and full longer than conventional strings.
Different genres require different tones from the bass, so I use many different types of strings depending on what the session calls for.
