It didn't matter what the crowd thought and now that is one of his signature songs. I knew someone who auditioned for that show and she was getting so frustrated because the pre-judges were allowing people who sang like crap in and not allowing people who could sing go on if they didn't have a certain look. It's dribble. Or just a really long Ford commercial.
You have to remember what the show is about though. While it bills itself as a singing competition, it's really entertainment.
It's prime-time entertainment trying to attract ratings. Why else would they spend hours showing us people who can't sing? Because it's funny, that's why. And they're trying to attract eyeballs to television sets. Because it has the same comedic appeal as a The Office. It's like watching a train wreck. It's so bad, but you can't turn away.
A.I. is not really a singing competition. If it were, it would be structured differently, and musical integrity would be important. As it is, they chop-shop the songs just to get to the vocal parts and they spend whole entire episodes showing us people who can't carry a tune.
Entertainment. That's all.
