John,

Not sure you got the answer to the question in this thread? I picked up a Roland Cube 30 last month for about $100 and am satisfied with its tone for getting some decent sounds.

In terms of hooking it up w/o USB directly to your computer, most sound cards these days have an 1/8" jack for a line-in/mic. So amplifier/pedal headphones out, using an 1/8" cord with a 1/4" adapter if necessary, into the sound-card's 1/8" line-in, is the plain-jane answer that works for me.

You'll need software of course to record what comes into that microphone input, but that's a different thread :)

Ive been reading over posts concerning guitar effects units and havent found much discussion on using them to directly interface to a sound card or other interface.(No amp)
Just wonderin if some of you record this way and could suggest units that would be easy to operate without tons of bells and whistles.I know white noise will be a factor.Im just lookin for some good 70's soundin distortion/ tube overdrive, chorus , flanger, and some verbs.Something simple for around 100$.Im not a gigging gtr player persay so its not overly important that I have pedals to quickly change parameters.Just lookin for some ideas.

Thanks, '

Dang son, 100$..You stole it.. MF sells them for 245$.Coincidentally, I tried out a cube at a local store last week.I cant remeber if it was a 20 -30, maybe even a 60???..Yeah , I only like 2 of the amp modelers on it.That British stack REALLY sucked I thought. Prolly never use THAT flanger, not enough control over the sweep , depth, rate . etc. I tell ya , I just dont like anything new. Ill play with a gtr player on the 10th and has a bunch of old stuff.Hell, theres no jams around here anymore to scope peoples stuff out . Ill go back down to that store and check it out again, see which one it is..Dont really need an amp , but If I can dail in what I want, it might be worth it .I cant even remeber what they were askin for it???

Thanks,
John

Iono what I was thinkin. I meant min-cube. Age setting in I guess. Yeah, some of the tones are bad, but we're talking $100 right? All I'm sayin is that you can send headphone-wattage directly into the sound-card's line-in port and be safe. So if you can eBay an econo rig for that awesome sound, and it has a headphone hole, then plug in!

;)

On a side note, I recently unearthed a Digitech Legend 21 Guitar Effects processor from a box of music junk I actually didn't sell off in the 90's. It's not a marshal, but if you can find a used one in your budget, it's got lots of goodies to play with.

I also use the GNX3000, I had a problem with the software and the lack of suport caused me not to use there usb interface, I use it for efects and amp modeling, but my iterface is a lexicon lamda It was under $200.00 and it comes with qbass le4 recording software. I like it because it has sevral diferent was to input sound. GOOD LUCK there is alot of stuff out there, I am on my third set of software and usb interface and im still not completly saticfied

They released a whole new version of the software not long ago that works much better. I know the original software crashed a lot. I don't use their recording software though, just the pedal program (X-edit?). I go directly into an 8-track digital recorder from the pedal, using the PC only for a bridge when practicing (which really IS nice with the USB features).

I don't mind using the computer to program the pedal, but I don't care for recording on the PC, it's always seemed overly complicated and buggy. I like physical tracks (even though mine's a digital now lol), knobs, buttons, etc...
