Hey all,
It sounds like a lot of you have home studios. If you're not finding the people you need to finish that song you've been recording or you feel like guesting on other peoples stuff check out

http://www.musicianscollaboration.com

Amazing talent and a great bunch o people. Check out the audition search page that I help write that allows you search for tunes needing your part or start your own project. Its FREE. Did I mention that the talent there is phenom. Real mixing and mastering engineers hang out there and are allways willing to lend a hand on your project.

Wow I would of thought some of you would jump at this since I hear a lot of people complaining they are hard up for people to play with.

To play with... yes... but to collaborate with in a different area/state... not necessarily. Those kinda things are sketchy. I can't speak for everyone on here... but my preference is to collaborate in person and with someone that I'll be playing with for a while in the band I'm in.

I used to be that way too but there are too many great musicans out there to not use them. Initially I thought it would be hard to collab online but it was actually easier. If you start the tune it's like your collaborating with 10 or 20 people. You can pick and choose the ideas that people offer. Plus you have another vehicle for finding other musicians

I can understand people's misgivings: I had some, myself.
You just have to listen to them play/sing first.
Get a feeling for where they are, then exchange a few emails.
- if you get any bad vibes: say, "No, thanks."
.
Otherwise - what the hell - why not? You both can walk away more experienced . . . and with a nice song . . .
I collaborated with a great singer who lives in Australia.
I live in CT - you couldn't get any farther away . . . halfway around the word. Both the South Pole and the North pole are closer, literly . . .
.
If you want to hear the results, go to my profile & listen to "Descending Boogie - Red."
I did Guitar & Bass for my song "Descending Boogie." She heard it, liked it, said she had lyrics to fit it.
I read the lyrics for her song, "Red," and then I sent the song to her. She added sung the vocals, & harmonies, and sent them back.
We talked, and made some changes . . . got an FM-quality song.
I think it was definitely worth it. We're working on another song, now, with plans for a 3rd song . . .
Give it a listen . . .

Yup I agree but with MC you don't have to use emails they have a forum software for that. We've modified it to so you can track your song status and others can search for songs need bass or vocals or whatever. Also you don't have to have an FTP site. You can upload tracks right to the forums. A lot of times you'll get multiple submissions and more than a few times I rearranged my songs to include someones part.

You can sample all the finished tunes by going to http://www.musicianscollaboration.com and clicking on the MP3 Player.

Psst....70's Funk is my tune :D

Look at it this way. Nothing is stopping you from doing both.

  this whole thing sounds interesting. but before i use up a bunch of the (very) limited time that i have acces to the internet, how easy is it to find like-minded people? how many people are involved? if it's worth it i'll definetly check it out.

Define like minded people. In my experience I've had the toughest time finding like minded people. Not many people want to hear a bass solo or take the forefront or into instrumental only music. While not everyone shares this interest of mine I've found more than enough people to keep me busy and to play on my tunes. Almost all of the people that I've worked with have been better musicians than me and while I'm not the best I'm no beginner.

it's a little bit different than a band where you are in a "relationship" that's somewhat exclusive. With MC everyone's is in your band but YOU control the content of YOUR song and who's take gets chosen. Why would you not want to have the option of choosing from several different vocalists, guitarist, drummers, keyboard players etc. Most of the time once your play on a few then you will have to start turning down requests for tracks.

In brief heres how it works

1) If you have an idea basic or advanced you start a thread and post bed tracks. If your looking for a bass you post a bassless version, or drums post a drumless version. You update the audtion status indicating you want whatever. Remember you can request auditions from someone who plays an instrument or a sound engineer or lyricist or vocalist. The general rule is that the initial poster has creative control.

2)Some might ask a few questions and then post an audition but more often than not you will get several audition posts. One of my tunes had 5 drummers post! If you like one you ask for their final track and then incorporate it in your project and remake a new bed track.

3) Once you have all the parts you want you mix it your self or send it all to an audio engineer and they will mix and master. Getting your tune mastered for free is worth is alone. That mastering is a black art.

Every year they vote on the tunes and then make a compilation CD.

They can also help sell your stuff on itunes. I don't know about you, but I'd take 60 cents on the dollar.
