And when his amp breaks, the rest of the band is now in a bind to financially help him buy a new amp or whatever, or deal with his shitty 10w combo amp until he scratches up enough cash on his own. Probably the same guy who bums gas money to get to practice. This is the guy I DON'T want in my band, even if he plays like Steve Vai.

Depending on how long it actually takes for a member to get the member they're looking for, that could take quite the while. Like I said, 10 dollars here and there add up. That's $60 for just half a year of searching. If you want to filter out the people that can't fund themselves, specifically say it, whether in your description, or when you audition. That's how I've always done it.
