Kraftwerk has been a favorite of mine since I first heard them 25 years ago on my friends dad's vinyl collection. I think Autobahn is pretty overrated but love most of their other stuff.

I loved these guys in the 70s. They never seemed to have a breakthrough, but some of there songs were as experimental as you could be without actually being Frank Zappa

None were more experimental than Weather Report. I played in a band with Jose' Rossy (percussionist who replaced Alex Acuna in Weather Report) and heard some of the stories. These guys were so far ahead of everyone else (except Frank Zappa) and invented "fusion" in my opinion

I love Weather Report (who came along in 197O) and i consider them... along w Return To Forever, Mahavishnu, etc as fusion pioneers,....but most people credit Miles and his album "Bitches Brew" (1969) w being the invention of fusion.

along w a few others....i disagree. Gary Burton enlisted Larry Coryell to play loud distorted gtr in his band back in 1967 when they released the album "Duster". an argument can easily be made, that this was THE first "fusion" record and first fusion band!

WOW! That brings me back 40 years. I wasn't very committed to good music like that. Every venue wanted a band that got the girls shaking their booty.

I was fortunate enough to see Larry Coryell at Richard's in Atlanta in the early seventies. Pretty radical.

But Mahavishnu? Caused one of my favorite bands to break up. We saw them one night on 'In Concert" and were so blown away we all decided we had to do something cooler than we were presently doing.

It was a huge mistake as it transpired but our lead guitarist wrote one of the best songs I've heard to this day called "Whatever happened to the band." He asked me to re-record the bass part but I wouldn't touch it. He had the magic on that one. It was one of those very special moments and boy do I wish I had a recording of it.
