Twenty-five years ago I was in your shoes and I had one guy I played w/ on a regular basis. We were both getting our finger-picking chops down and we got together once a week and woodshedded together for a few years. I didn't get a chance to get out and gig until my youngest started HS.
IOW - take this time in your life to develop your chops. When the kids get older, you'll be ready to get out and play.
Just my 2 cents..............FWIW.
Heh, 25 years ago I'd already been playing music (by then) for about 20 years.
So, I've been playing for a while . . . gigged a bunch, ran open mikes, gave lessons . . . been on the radio . . .
I'm no a beginner; I've written over 200 songs and copyrighted over 70, with another 25 or so ready for copyright.
I first started jamming with friends around 1971 or so.
So, yeah, I practice enough, my chops are good enough . . . been around a while.
.
But, the thing is, I segue into and out of the music scene, as my mood changes.
Lately I've been 'in the mood.'
I had a couple friends over yesterday, and we played for a few hours. They want to make it a regular thing, and - I, well, I guess that's all right with me, too.
They're a couple of good guys, with a lot of experience under their belts . . .
One of them is in 4 bands (I'd make his 5th) and the other one is in 3, I think, but he also gigs solo, for a living.
Between the 3 of us we have over 150 years experience.
I've known each of them for about 50 years or so . . . since shortly after high school.
What's cool is that each of us plays entirely differently, and the overlap makes some good music.
.
Maybe we'll make a trio, or a duo, or maybe even a full band with a drummer and a couple singers.
. . . dunno . . .
In the mean time, I'm looking forward to spring, so I can have a few more patio-parties.
