Not denying that Plant was a hell of a singer in his day, but the studio used a lot of tricks to make him sound like he did on records.
Back in 2002/3 I saw Plant (solo tour), Jon Anderson with Yes and Roger Daltry with the Who. The only one who still had the vocal range he had had in the 70s was Anderson.

That may be true of speaking pitch, but the general rule is that as you get older you lose range (specially the high end) - and if you were a smoker or a hard liquor drinker, even worse.
