I just returned from a six day hiatus, well deserved (I think). I want to apologize to the Christians here that this old Pagan used their Easter as an excuse to do it, but I don't apologize for all the cool things I learned while away. So, here goes.

I like to listen to university lectures on CD while on long drives.
I know. How nerdy can you get. But it's the truth. You'd think I'd be all over listening to music, but I found myself enraptured by a lecture series on CD by Prof. Daniel Robinson on psychological research. For six goddamned hours. When we arrived at my folks house in Mesquite, Nevada, I was almost disappointed that we had to turn it off and get out of the car.

"You think you're enlightened? Try spending a few days with your parents." - Ram Das
I'm quoting the great one there because, that is one of the most profound truths I have ever heard spoken. We spent five days with my folks, and while I love them dearly, they can still sometimes manage to "push those old buttons" they did back when you were 14. No matter how much older or wiser you get, mom is still there to remind you that you don't know crap.

I love my new birthday present
You're looking at a Makarov 9mm. Russian design, East German make (which means this is vintage piece) built like a tank. Never jams, rock solid snap. Accurate as hell. My dad gave it to me along with three boxes of rounds, and we took it out for some fun in the desert. Oh yeah, Baby.

The best pasta and house wine in The West is in Mesquite
Lee's Tavern, in Mesquite Nevada. The chef is brilliant. The house wine is excellent - you actually get a full, large glass and it's only about 4 bucks. The atmosphere is great, like an English pub. Best value for dinner that you'll find.

Zion National Park is Heaven on Earth
No words needed, our photos.

Moose and Elk like to eat the same shitty alfalfa pellets
We fed them both while hiking in Zion, and they damn near eat the entire bag - paper and all - out of our hands. They are not discerning epicureans.

Driving on I-15, Through Provo, sucks
I have decided I will no longer move out of the way when in the left lane. People have a weird habit here of getting right up on your ass if you are in the left lane, even if you are exceeding the speed limit, just because they do not want anyone in front of them. I will not appease their obsession.

I love seeing the nightlights of Salt Lake City, coming around the Point of The Mountain
It lets you know you have arrived home one more time, and your animals at home are probably already picking up the psychic vibe that you're just minutes away from the door.

Political topic threads on BandMix suck
I'm going to throw Allen a bone here. Copying cheap propaganda and pasting it into topic threads, in between insults and self righteous scoffing is a massive waste of bandwith. There is no truth in politics. Stop agonizing over it, stop searching for it, and stop trying to convince people. It's like trying to teach algebra to a pig: it gets you nowhere, and annoys the pig.

I love my wife more than I thought I did
I have never known such a passionate, intelligent, compassionate companion in all things, than her. I would say that I don't deserve her, but she would council me on the possible negative projection of self deprecation (she's a licensed psychological therapist).

May all of your Easter vacations be so enlightening, if they haven't already.

Nice pistol there Makarov. lucky dog. We spent the week in the Mountains of Eastern Ok. and north west AR. Not real big by Rocky Standards but beautifull just the same. Me my wife and two of my kids (my sons 12 & 13) Stuffed into my extended jeep unlimited. We hiked the Civil War National Parks at PEA Ridge and Prairie Grove. The excessive rain was actually kind of neat. Waterfalls on the mountain sides everywhere. And huge springs welling out of the ground amoung the rocks. Few People lots of deer wild turkeys and stuff. Spent the night of my 26th wedding anv. In a cabin on the side of the mountain.

Unfortunately, not this time. We have sort of "adopted" Zion as our touchpoint in the desert...we try to go there at least four times a year (usually with the change of seasons).

Even though I have spent much of my life in these environs, last year I discovered the Coral Pink Dunes, between Zion and Kanab. They are incredible. Don't miss them if you ever get out this way.

wow that's a nice gun...
I have (among others) a smith and wes 9mm with a 4inch barrel that my father gave to me... it's a model 49 - std issue at the fbi for many years... something about him(my father) having used it makes it special...
but I can't hit a damn thing with it. 35ft and I can barely hit the board. Then I switch to my ruger 22cal single action and I swear I could unscrew a soda bottle cap at 50 paces.
I checked the barrel and it's like brand new... guess it's just the kick.
you never cease to surprise me irminsul... didn't pick you for a gun enthusiast either (no offense).

anywho, zion... can't wait to visit again... was there approx 4years ago and it is by far the most impressive variety of rock formations I've seen... did you visit the "subway" at all? (underground river)

That is too cool. I'm jealous. I love it out West.
Glad you enjoyed your holiday. (...holiday as in vacation, not Easter. Easter is about as Christian as you are! hahahaa)

Cheers

Oh yes, it's the northern entrance (Kolob canyon) to what they call "The Narrows". When the flood risk is low it's a fantastic place to explore. We usually go in at the southern entrance, at the site known as "The Temple of Simawava".

I have some pics and video I took in there, I'll post it sometime.

well you sure did alot more than i did over the easter irminsul...
nice gun ....very cold war retro...

and i have to say i loved nevada both times i was there..its a beautiful part of the world and a million miles away from the irish landscape..
myself and the wife drove out to red rocks and spent the day walking around taking pictures and trying to avoid rattle snakes...

i have a morbid fascination with the desert...and walking around red rocks i felt like i was in a spaghetti western...

very cool place...and vegas is only a 40 min drive away..
i would advise everyone who goes to vegas to spend a day out at red rocks.

I haven't been in Vegas since 1984, but if I ever get back out, I'd make it a point to stop by Shreddin' Teddy's place for a steak and a jam session out on the patio.. Frig the cassino's, we got 'em here now, and all it does is attract a lot of fools who dont give a rat's ass about the beauty of the environs.

Unfortunately true. But the wife and I have a pretty good sniffer for them types, and stay FAAARRR away from them.

IA you probably got that Spaghetti Western feeling for a very good reason..many many of the great Westerns were filmed in Southern Utah and parts of Nevada. My dad used to run the Utah travel council and he was often a consultant for the film companies on where to get the best shots. One he consulted on was the old Robert Redford film "Jeremiah Johnson".
