I was watching a documentary on the learning process and they stated about 10,000 hours of practice is the threshold of being pro. Of course it doesn't account for inspiration, talent, etc.

Sheet music is a useful tool, knowing how to read it is another tool. A good ear is a useful tool, Knowing your fretboard is another tool. Understanding melody, harmony, and songwriting are useful tools.

You need some but not all of these tools to be a working musician. The more tools in your bag, the more opportunities present themselves, but a good ear and knowing your way around an instrument can take you pretty far.
