P-JAZZ played a gig last night that for all intents and purposes was OUTSIDE!

we've been playing regularly at a hotel that has a nice covered patio that butts up to the back of the bldg. they've been promising to install a clear plastic curtain, and yesterday they finally had gotten around to it. only problem is that it didn't extend all the freaking way to the ground! DOH! it actually stopped short a good foot off the ground...crikey!

they had one space heater going that did nothing for us as it was a good 50 ft away. and to top it off, behind the stage....completely OPEN!

it was 50 when we started playing at 7:00 and 42 degrees when we quit at 10:00. even the coffee laced w Dewars that i was drinking did little to keep me warm.

at one point we switched things up and i finally got to return to playing bass w my favorite drummer. that was maybe the best part of the gig for me...well, that and getting in my car afterwards and blasting the heat!

You Midwesterners don't know what real cold is!

Up here in New England we have enough sense not to take outside gigs after September!

well, the worst part was they gave Monty our drummer who was the first of us to arrive on the scene the choice of playing inside or out...and the bone head opted for outside!

Dunno, Mike--I endured the Great Blizzard of '78 in Columbus; they imposed martial law and arrested anyone who ventured outside. The dream back then was simple: to live in a warm climate.

Some years later I realized that dream; haven't seen snow--'cept on TV--since 1997, during a trip back to see the Ohio St./Michigan game. Gave up all that frigid weather...and playin' anything even remotely related to jazz. Pretty shrewd, eh?

(Sound of noggin thumpin' on brick wall...)

Blizzard of 78 - I was stuck in the dorms at Boston University. The National Guard had to come to the dorm kitchens to prepare food for us as the cafeteria workers couldn't get in. Really boring 5 days, as the local liquor stores ran dry the first day.
Heat went out on my side of the dorm building on the 3rd day, took 3 days to fix that. On the 4th day the city was hiring anyone with a shovel to dig out the trolley tracks - of course none of us had shovels!
