"The brads on one hinge have also broken off on the lid. I'd like to replace these w/ small machine bolts, lock washers and nuts. How do you detach the machine out of the case to get to the back side of the brads??"
I haven't seen an Echoplex for over 20 years. But as I remember the transport has only 3 or 4 big screws that hold it into the case. Once those are removed the transport lifts right out. Sometimes the transport sticks to the bottom but if you have all the screws out rocking iot a little bit will free it.
"Hey Slacker- seems my beloved Echoplex is putting out a weak signal to the board. I haven't cleaned it for some time but I haven't used it but maybe 30 minutes since the last cleaning.
It's solid-state. You have any ideas?? I have the faders and the gain all the way up on the board and it's not pushing nearly as much as a clean signal. Might be the old telephone wire coming out of the unit. Not much room in the case. I need to find a longer instrument cable w/ a 90 degree jack to check that connection."
Clean the tape heads with a swab and alcohol and squirt a bit of contact cleaner in the controls to clean them. (Can be bought at an electronics shop) "Techspray" is a good brand. I can't imagine why someone would use "telephone wire" in an audio circuit. If a good cleaning doesn't work it is possible that the input or even the output transistor may have been damaged by static electricity when hooking the unit up.
Other than that, it is rather impossible to diagnose something electronic without actually testing the components. Did you try a different input on the board to make sure it is the echo that is faulty?
