Totally agree with ya Chris. THE only way to do it is to play with other musicians, play-learn- stretch ya-self outside ya comfort zone? Rehearse & gig.
Talking of which, my bands looking for a drummer, we`re Chichester based, (not far from Pompey)!?
We`ve gigs in the offing too.
Interested, call me please..... 07561375298 John.
Cheers.

Mike, I love it when newbies bump interesting old threads on here. I do this all the time on my main forum. I just can't do it here because this site is like a government design from the nineties. It's so ugly that it hurts my eyes and I find it impossible to search for anything. This is a better topic than I've seen in a while.

I have to ask. Have you heard much Metallica? Your comment makes me think you're only familiar with their platinum radio and mtv-friendly stuff. I grew up on their music, bought all the guitar tab books, did myself a favor in realizing that I couldn't play their super technical style of metal. Then they completely sold out and made their entire repertoire bland, doing me a favor and letting me move on to better music.
These days I'm into bands that have a deeper understanding of how to make music that can reach into your soul and your brain and connect with more emotions and synapses than the old "thrash metal". For instance, I've been introduced to a band called Thee Oh Sees. Their music is bathed in reverb. It soaks into every crack and crevice like grease in fried chicken. It's that delicious, too, because they are musicians who understand how to use that effect. They write and record music in a style that makes that sound work. They're taking music in a much deeper direction than louder and faster and more compressed.
Metallica helped popularize that style, only to be completely outdone in every category by Slayer. Then others outdid them. It's a nuclear arms race, with musical instruments. No one even really wins. Their music is something to glom onto when you're an angst filled teen, but if you're listening to just that one genre as an adult, you might have some problems. Just guessing. I still like that stuff and listen to it once in a while, for old times sake, but it doesn't really do much for me, overall.

It kind of caused a rut - but there wasn't a hole deep enough for me not to dig myself out of. We also did originals along with those bands. Only playing one band especially a band like Metallica whos songs are very close to the same will put you in a rut for sure. They don't suck but the style runs along very close with each song. Not a whole lot of variation- kind of like the originals we did way back when. Not that we were as good as Metallica back then. We weren't. Nice topic.

it is so rare to find anyone who knew about Trapeze.
Loved 'em
