So I go to check out this office space yesterday afternoon...

I call them earlier in the day and all the basics are discussed, and then the lady asks,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So what kind of business do you do?".
"Well, I will be doing music mixing. Songs and voiceovers and things like that.", I say.
"Oh. Well would it be loud?"
"Probably a little louder than a conversation where two people are talking from different sides of the room."
"Oh, ok... I'll have to double check with __. Do you know where we are located?"
"You have an office in the same complex, right?"
"Yes."
"Ok, I'll be down this evening to check out the options you have, and probably ask a few more questions"
I make it down there and walk in their office. Tell them I'm there to check out a few units.
"Oh, are you ___ ?"
"No, I'm ____"
Then she starts talking quietly to a lady around the corner, who I couldn't see.
Then she says,
"We have some clients, like a massage therapist, that sometimes work into the evenings and they like it very quiet."
"What are the hours of access? Can I work at night?"
Some more mumbling around the corner.
"Well all the tenants have a key. But the walls are very thin in here and people like it very quiet. I don't think that it will work."
"Ok... Well... thanks."
I left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don't blast music really loud when I'm attempting audio work, it just squashes your ears out.
And never mind that I was willing to go in when everyone was gone for the day....

Feels pretty neat to meet with some discrimination.

Has anyone gone through this sort of thing?
Sure, i could get a space where bands rehearse, but Id be fighting ambient racket from hell.

Thin wall construction? Problaby wouldn't be any good for your use anyway. Unless you were planning on adding a lot of acoustic treatment.

Yes, industrial complex or the new rage in our area is artist lofts. They are live/work arrangements where you have an upstairs apt, and downstairs work area. The are also filled with performance artists and musicians who often need quality DAW work so a built-in clientele.

I agree - however due to lots of empty spaces (in this area), many people are using these mini-industrial buildings these days after hours for their part-time businesses. Usually they are steel buildings and if they have any exiting office areas, its cheap thin-wall construction, and the rooms are totally unsuitable for mixing work, where you need good acoustic treatment. Of course if the owners have no problems with you adding thicker walls, ceiling clouds, etc, should not be an issue. Tell them you're a music 'publisher', they won't know what that really means!

When my hair hung down halfway to my ass I got discriminated against all the time. Hippies and musicians - bunch of ne'er-do-wells!
