so the wife and i drove to st. louis yesterday to catch jazz guitar legend Pat Martino play in a small jazz club....JAZZ At The Bistro (my fave place to catch music). we got to watch him operate from our table 20 feet away and my jaw is still hanging open. classic organ trio format....Hammond B3, gtr, drums. killer band.

i approached him in the bar and spoke w him briefly before his set. he happily signed an old method book of his "Linear Expressions".....he was totally approachable, humble, and graceful.

i have to say, i was expecting great gtr tone... but his sound might be THE best live jazz gtr tone i've ever heard!

he was playing his signature Les Paul like BENEDETTO guitar. but check this out... he was playing thru an Acoustic Image (solid state) amp thru..... a 4x12 MESA cab!!! whoa.....what tone! now Acoustic Image amps, cabs, and combos are very popular w jazzbos......but you don't usually see many jazz gtrsts playing thru a 4x12 MESA cab!

you can read about the gtr at this link it also has a cpl of embedded youtubes of him playing the gtr through that rig.

I think he could sound great playing a Oscar Schmidt Ukelele!
Sounds like that was an amazing night of great music!

The cat has it for sure. His description of why he likes his signature guitar so much resonated with me - it's how I feel about my Gibson Firebird - more than a guitar - something special.

My only problem with Martino is somewhere a bass player's family is starving!
