I used the Blackstar for the first two sets Friday. It sounded good but The All Around is about three times the size of the usual places we play so I brought in the Marshall for the last two sets. I ran the Blackstar master on 5, and the Marshall on 3. Great night, both of my bands shared the stage.

Are you not using your Mesa anymore?

Mesa? I think you may have me confused with John, I believe he uses a Mesa (Rectifier?). I've always used Marshall.

I know John uses one but I could have sworn you use to use one. Oh well there's another sign of my senility!

I have a decent prac amp but to play with people - no thanks. It doesn't have the speaker area necessary for that even though it generates a pretty fair volume. It's just that small amps can throw out volume that exceeds the capacity of the speakers. (

Yes there exceptions and I know about Fender Reverbs, Line6 etc.

I run my Mustang V 200 watt head (using 100 watts of it) against a Marshal 4x12 and I don't have to play it very loud to get a great sound. It actually sounds better on low volume than the prac amp does. The amp can push out the raw sound and the speakers dress it in the sound I want.

Playing with drums, bass etc I rarely have to take it above 5 but I surely agree with Crip and Scott - you need the big stuff to get a 'band' sound (and to look cool!) 8)

Crip2nite wrote:OMG!! My guitar sounds AWESOME through the PA system... Remember, we're only a 3 piece band so my guitars need to fill out the room as much as possible... The bassist brings this humongous rig with a million cabs....he don't need to be mic'd but sometimes in the bigger venues, we'll mic the drums... but I love hearing my amp thru the PA....

Whoa nellie !!!!

I never run my guitar through the PA.
I won't run drums or bass through it either..vocals only.

The rest of the peeps I snicker-snack with usually have something strong so I figure that the weak link is going to be the PA...even the house PA, I don't trust them. You never know when it's not going to be working 100% and it'll sound like sh*t or even worse, ONLY GETTING SIGNAL FROM ONE CHANNEL. lol

(Oh I hate that so bad it makes me grind my teeth)

Why have a house PA if it barely works? Just makes that venue look sad and forgotten. lol

And Jeff is 100% right, Marshall is for everything.
Marshall guitar amps and I have an old Marshall bass amp and that thing is enough to make you puke if you stand in front of that bass signal..at only 200W. I use it with (2) 2x15 Peavey 215D's and it will shake your money maker, by jingo..better stand back or else.

...We own the PA... I don't "line in" the PA.... I just mike my speaker cab to it... really fills out the room!

Here's an example:

Crip2nite wrote: No matter how small or big the gig.... always go with the 4x 12 cab with at least a 100 watt head... and I personally ALWAYS mic my amp through the PA... Don't matter how much you have to drag around... Looks cooler on stage! 8)

"looks cooler"? i know you're saying that tongue in cheek, but i gotta say that's personal pref and all in the eye of the beholder.

to me there's nothing goofier than seeing behemoth amps and bigger stacks/multi cabs (esp when they might not be sounding all that happening) in smaller venues or when they're being reinforced by the PA.

this is esp so with bass rigs for me. when i was 18 i might have thought SVT's w 8x12 cabs looked cool (for the record ...i do still think they SOUND cool) but there are other more practical ways to get similar tones.

s'all good...different tones for different holmes.

Everything and everyone goes through the PA.
Everyone and everything is powered of the conditioners.
We have 3 systems we match to the venue by size not only which PA/board but speaker arrangement.
Long throw towers sound like cap in a small venue.

Always have a back up.
