I'd say the ones who actually know how are musicians. So are some of the others, drums just aren't their primary instrument.

"everybody plays drums. A few of them actually know how."

That can be applied to any instrumentalist, I think. Most notably for this forum, I'd say guitarists. I've seen hundreds in my experience so far - the number of them who are truly masters of their instrument, I can count on one hand.

While what you say is true, I think my drummer friend was commenting on the drums be very open to "abuse" in the form of people who can swing sticks around and occasionally actually hit the drum, but who really shouldn't be called "drummers".

With most instruments you really do need a certain level of skill to even kid yourself into believing you know what you're doing. He and I had both seen - at the time - several people who really had no clue whatsoever trying to play drums and kidding themselves into believing they could on the basis that they did, in fact, hit the snare drum once in a while.

IME, it takes more work to be a bad guitarist than it does to be a bad drummer. But to be good at either requires pretty much the same level of effort.

Yes, I understood that, and my other posts stands. Just because one can thrash out a few bar chords does not, in my ever so humble opinion, make them a "guitarist".

Amen Irminsul! I have to talk myself into going out and hear live music sometimes these days. I want to be moved and it happens all too infrequently. Uninspired guitar work is particularly painful.

Uninspired music is the norm.
