Then why do we hear people who are so good people tell them all the time "I can't believe you aren't on the radio."?
Talented people are overlooked more often that they are discovered. Likewise the musically stunted make it big with autotune.

sometimes in life things are what they seem, and the excuses and apologetics, are, really what they are;
opiate.

Actually the auto tune feature isn't always referred to as "auto tune", but that's just semantics at best.

"G-Snap" is on the Cakewalk Sonar side. Pro Tools uses Antares "Auto Tune Evo", although my Pro Tools knowledge is weak at best.

An auto tune on the vocals usually gives a oddly robotic sound that sounds uncomfortably like POP or a drunk robot. (wash my mouth out with soap)

The "musically stunted" do not use auto tune, the engineers behind the console are doling it out as a magical cure for being tone deaf or a rough spot on your tune du jour..

When you get up on stage it's not going to save you if you suck, only on your momentary recording. At some point, it all comes full circle.
Try to keep your work as live sounding as possible and you won't get caught with your hand in your pants.

not necessarily

there are lots of indie artists who are great but never going to be offered a deal because of age, physical appearance, or other such shallow considerations.

unfair, yes, but reality...though not insurmountable for a comfortable career without a major label. Under current conditions in the industry, an artist who can draw audiences already would be unwise to sign with anyone.

Most labels are looking for someone they can see ROI (Return On Investment) from for 10 years. The chances of that are greater if the person is young and good looking.

"if you were good enough for a record deal,

I think Yod summed it up pretty good.

I'd add that being good enough to merit a record deal is only one part of the picture. you have to totally dedicate yourself to your career. Sick kids, wives and car problems - all that sh*t must be ignored and you must travel most of the time.

That's why younger guys have a huge edge. Less ties that bind.

Many of us on this forum have done that for a while and got tired of starving. Others are working square jobs and pursuing recording priojects or local gigs. Some are pretty damn good. But they need medical insurance, or have a child with issues, a mortgage or whatever.

The 'record deal' life style is very rough. You have to want it very badly.

A pal of mine if finishing up a splendid CD of Sinatra covers. He arranged all the music - lots of horns, vibes and sax. He played keys and sang. I asked him what his goal was, "To do something really well."

That is everybit as worthy a goal as a record deal. And my pal is quite good enough the record deal. At a certain level it's about making choices.

I agree that talent is required to get a record deal, but I feel that you need some luck too!

Peg Lautny wrote:Bravo...nice tune. I'm not gonna address your "good enough for a label" question but I will offer what I hope will be taken as constructive criticism.

I have a little trouble with the bass drum hits....especially the second one in the pattern where it hits on the "and' of '2'. They don't always quite line up with the bass playing. It feels particularly unsettled from 0.11 to 0.30.

And this is entirely my personal taste, but after awhile that same rhythmic figure the bass drum plays (and the music follows) of hitting on the '1' and the "and" of '2' gets pretty old for me with it running though the entire song.

Personally I think it might work better if you came off that same pattern for the choruses or even a bridge to break it up a little.

Thank you peg for your input! I will keep your constructive criticism in mind for my next song. I agree that I need to spice it up a little. Thanks for the advice and helping me learn how to improve =) good luck to you in your musical career!
