What we have here is a failure to communicate. I have not once said that a kid can do anything I want. I have 6 kids to prove it.

However, I still believe that anyone can do anything they want, if they apply themselves and don't give up. In my own life, I've done many things that people have said were impossible. They were mostly easier than I thought but took serious commitment and a stubbornness of purpose.

And of course, nothing is impossible with God

Yes, they can and you swerved into the answer why they don't. They have to "set their minds to accomplish" and then follow up by doing the necessary work. I didn't say they could do it easily, or that it would come overnight.

My Definition of MUSE might be different that others'. My definition subscribes to the notion that a muse is really a divine and extraordinary gift, possessed by very few individuals, who are surrounded by mediocrity and plain ignorance.

When you first posted that I had to look up the definition of "muse" and apparently it goes back to greek mythology, where the 7 daughters of Zeus would whisper inspiration for the arts into someone's brain.

So it appears that the definition is really only "outside inspiration" for creating artistic efforts.

I believe that songs are floating in the air around us constantly. It's really only a matter of taking time to "hear" them and then concentration to see it through to completion.

The only difference between one person and the next is their desire to sustain concentration for as long as it takes.

I agree with Paperdog wholeheartedly on this one.. same theory applies to mathematics..some are not born with the ability to comprehend calculus no matter how many hours they invest to comprehend it.. some things can only be comprehended by an elite group, probably genetics has more to do with this than not.. that's why I laugh when Obama wants all kid in pre-school.. many will not benefit from lack of intellect..

Actually, I should qualify something here. I can tell you without a doubt, that I can run the United States as a Leader, as a president. I merely have to apply myself and never give up...But what I cannot guarantee you, is whether I run the United States...into the ground or on to a higher plane.

As with all cream, (within in the context of the container) it rises to the top. Me, personally, I'm somewhere submersed, near the bottom That is my reality. Otherwise I would have risen to the top by now.

Thus its a safe bet to assert that "Never in this life time", will I become the president of the United states, on the basis that I willed my self to do so. Its a fools game to believe otherwise.

But alas ted... I have done some extraordinary things that nobody else here has... For example... I stayed at holiday Inn Express once

Perseverance ranks higher than talent since the latter is a gift, the former is self control based upon motivation or sheer self discipline.

There still areas were some just aren't going to go. Is everyone a leader? Can anyone learn to play a musical instrument? Does everyone understand engines and things mechanical?

I suppose the real question is could they do these things if they really wished to do it and truly applied themselves?

And the answer is, "sometimes but not always."

I periodically teach people to play guitar - it's pretty easy because most quit when I give them their first assignment: learn the notes on the strings! Too much work they tell me. OK... But they probably could do it if they wanted it bad enough. (I've got two now - one is a 'maybe' and the other is a for-sure)

I do believe though, with music, anyone can learn to play well enough to amuse himself. Most everyone could push themselves to a level of garage band, small clubs. It's just that it is a lot of work and we're all differently motivated.

Just don't ask me to work on an engine. I was accused of cheating on my test in my armoured regiment - got a 90+ for gunnery and a 30 for mechanical. They swore that no one was dumb enough to get a 30 so I must have cheated for some unknown reason! (wrong).

Yes, natural talent will put someone ahead for the short run, but it is someone lesser talented who will persevere because it didn't come easy for them...and so it meant more to them.


For example, I can't think of a single rock star who has as much talent as this 4-year old kid.

Yet the music business has produced many success stories of people who worked hard and eventually persevered.



I believe that you could be President if you had that as a goal when you were young and worked towards that goal faithfully. It would be much harder at your age but still not impossible, imo, if you really applied yourself right now and worked obsessively toward that goal. You might be 80 before it happened...heck, you might die before it happened..but that doesn't mean it was impossible.

I believe Talbot could have been a rocket mechanic if he wanted it enough to put in the hours it takes....and I believe he could be teaching the next Eric Clapton.

Again, my philosophy is always "seize the day" and as I've walked towards large closed doors in the far distance, they opened by the time I got to them.

I refuse to accept that anything is impossible. We are not defeated until we quit.

For me, natural talent is number one.
Second is hard work, and if you work hard enough, the first doesn't matter as much as it did before.

I'm remember taking a finger strengthening tool for guitar lead out with me everywhere I went. Sort of each finger in a spring press. People called me a poser, whatever........ each and every moment I was bored, I got the darned thing out, and made my fingers stronger to cope with chords and lead I was then made to play. Quietly it started to work, despite what folks thought of me.

Nowadays I just need to be dexterous and nimble, have an acute sense of what I am trying to achieve.

What do you do each day to attain that?

I practice over and over again, that’s actually a serious understatement. If I can’t figure out where a tune is headed, I’ll spend maybe twelve hours messing with it. I don’t mind most times, since it always seems like a puzzle with some missing piece to me.

Sometimes I think I find it and sometimes I don’t. But if I leave it unfinished, it seems that the exact thought or mood escapes me and it usually remains incomplete. Of course quality is subjective, but I like my music, or I wouldn’t be writing it. I'd do it for free, I do it now and it actually costs money. It would be nice though, one day to get paid doing it.

This isnt about your practice methods... this thread is about what kids are being told for their lives and futures. As stated before... Kids CANNOT be "ANYTHING' they want to be." If they COULD, dont you think we'd have a cure for cancer by now...? Sheesh!

Is there anybody on Bandmix m that you know of , who can equal or surpass the legendary mucians of the last 5 decades? Anybody? Cause if we all can be anything we want, then why the fk arent we all up there with the best of them??
