I would think you would need to live in Kansas City or bigger metro area to do this? need lots of people walking past you in a downtown setting or something.

I know some buskers here in Chicago. You can make that much an hour, especially in rush hour downtown Chicago. You have to buy a license to perform in the streets here in Chicago.

A Busker Licence in Chicago = $100

We often make $80-100 per hour as a duo. Sing songs people like, people show appreciation. :D

It beats working bars.

are there any drawbacks busking in public, jsantos and j7 ? I have played in city parks but not making any effort establishing myself as a "for profit" entity.. never set out a tip jar.. did play with a band in Ft.Walton the Blair Morrow Band where occasionally we would play for tips .. busking would eventually draw in bullies and possible street thugs saying "give me a dollar"

Really does depend on where you are. People in the Boston area are much more stingy - you'd be lucky to make $10 an hour average. Cops will make you move in most high traffic places, just because they can. To busk in the subway, you have to buy a permit (limited number available).

We choose our locations carefully and find out the rules first. Some places require a permit, some only allow un-amplified music, some are a free-for-all. We do this a few times a year for kicks and don't plan our lives around it. Playing a little acoustic blues at La Jolla Shores Beach park includes some nice views.

philly is divided up into districts- the best ones you actually have to audition for, apply for permits, and be "chosen" as worthy... it really becomes more hassle than playing at a bar, and the opportunity to make money is not the best. We looked into it a couple of years ago, and found the whole process to be controlled- they tell you where to play and when, and don't care if you prefer a more peak hour, or if you prefer a different corner.. yes- they assign you a location after you audition and pay the licensing fees and additional "rent" fee per location.

If you think that's bad, you should look into the parking meter scams they got going now.. I won't even go there anymore unless I park in a suburb and take the PT in.

I have seen the cellist play and she is really pretty good. Last week I was down there and Sax guy was playing "Wonderful World".

One good thing about busking is you only need 3 or 4 good songs, at most - people don't hang around listening more than that.

I would rate this $40.00 an hour busker a B+ ..like that tech school commercial that plays afternoons on tv says, "if he can do it, you can do it too"..
