This is extrememly true as well. I like to be able to hear myself in the middle or under everyone else in the monitor, and never expect a solid mix, but when I'm getting blasted with my guitar 2x louder than everything else in the mix, I can't play worth a crap.
One specific night comes to mind, where we played a showcase, one set. With other bands showcasing, it was set up 10 mins, play 45, and 10 to break down. We were the 4th band in line, and by that point the sound man was drunk as hell. He had me JACKED in the monitors to the point that all the band could hear was me.. The drummer looked like that guy in the memorex commercials where his hair seemed to be literally blowing back as I hit each chord.
When I failed to get the attention of the sound guy, I started pulling back on my vol pedal.. but every time I did, he just added more gain and volume.. It was the worst set I've probably ever played.
I tore him a new one when I got off stage (would never see him again anyways).. he was so drunk he probably didn't remember.
