I'm a huge Tolkien fan - read The Lord of the RIngs about 30 times, saw all 3 LOTR moview multiple times in the theater, have 3 different versions on DVD.
Went and saw The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey over the weekend, first in 3D High Frame Rate, then in 2D the next day. I wasn't expecting anything as moving as the final LOTR movie, so was not disappointed in that regard.

What really makes all of these movies come alive is the soundtrack. Howard Shore has composed musical themes for various MiddleEarth races and happenings, and repeats those themes in the LOTR soundtracks, and repeats some of them in The Hobbit - just enough that they are familiar but lead to new music nonetheless. His orchestrations really fit the action that is happening on the screen - it isn't just 'backgorund music'.

As a purist I was disappointed in the movie.
I keep thinking " not in the book ! Not in the Book ! "
As a movie .... I gave it a c+
I liked the dwarf tunes a bit ....

I like Howard Shore.

I saw the original Rankin Bass Hobbit cartoon wayyy back maybe when it came out and the LOTR animated sequels (which were...okay, I guess).
The animation style threw me off and it dragged on until the final movie.

Never read the books though.
Liked the films co-written and directed by Peter Jackson.
The extended editions are better than the theatrical versions.

I wanna go see the Hobbit.
But, we are broke.
A friend is taking my girlfriend tomorrow, without me.
Kinda sucks.

Well at least your not alone in being broke . . .

Now I don't even want to go see it.

I'll wait for the DVD . . .

The only way to get the most out of the Hobbit is to get the flu and read the book with 103 fever..Totally vivid!
