What is it with musicians being so easily manipulated by the prospect of a record contract? It could be the most lecherous, one-sided record contract you've ever seen, but if it is marketed as some kind of "prize" some sucker always falls for it.

I once met a guy on Venice Beach in California who showed me his demo. He told me he spent $20,000 on it and was looking for a record deal. I spent 15 minutes lecturing the guy on the difference between a record deal and a distribution deal, how publishing rights work, how an advance works, etc etc. He was shocked that there was so much to record deals he didn't understand. Frankly, I was shocked that he had spent $20,000 and still didn't know sh*t about what he was doing.

This guy's demo was very good, and he had a lot of talent and personality. While I might have saved this guy from getting screwed, I can only imagine how many musicians don't meet the right people and end up being had.

Me thinks if he spent 20K on a demo he's already been screwed and ready to give birth.
