As for nuclear war, a likely scenario would be one nuclear bast about 150 miles up or so, or maybe 2 of them.
An EMP, electromagnetic Pulse.
Those 2 blasts, at that height, would knock out all electronics . . . cars, cell phones, radio/TV, computers and their memories . . .

And . . . get ready for this folks . . .

NO RECORDERS OR AMPLIFIERS!
AHGHH!
I believe that would only apply if they are
wired into the electrical system or on at the time. Say you have batteries and electronics gear stored in an enclosed metal (Shielded container) That would essentially be a short circuit for an EMP wouldn't it? Whatever lies inside should be just fine. But your cell still wouldn't work without the towers or electrical grid. But you should still be able to play your guitar and use battery operated recording devices and watch a couple of movies on your portable DVD player... at least until the battery [power was gone. Maybe an alternator hooked to a stationary bike would provide charging power as soon as the electromagnetic layer was restored after the destruction. After all, I don't believe the pulse would destroy that indefinitely.
On second though I may run an extension cord out of the disabled to China and rent electricity from them. Wait a minute... we're probably already paying them for energy in some form or another.
