george, i hear where you're coming from re. the final cd being an honest to life representation of who is in the band, but i have booked many bands and duos that were not the exact same lineup as was presented on a demo.
yeah...it will always be the same lead vclst because that is a huge part of the "product" you're "selling" but i've never had anyone complain when there is a different saxophonist or a different gtrst on the gig. if there are big changes in the personel lineup i let the folks booking me know that and they've always had enough trust and faith in my integrity to know that i will still be bringing A list players even if it's not the exact same crew.
the VAL & MAL duo thing i do is a good example. i use our video that has just the two of us performing live whenever i can as a booking tool. potential buyers can see and hear exactly what they'll be getting. Val will use that video too, but often she uses her CD that i wasn't involved w in any way. she explains "this is my cd w a full band. mark isn't on this. mark and i perform these tunes in a duo setting". completely honest and straightforward as i see it. they're getting to hear her singing (which is the biggest part of what we do) and get an idea of what kind of material we'll be performing.
and like other's have pointed out above...most people who pop your demo cd while they're stocking the bar, doing paperwork, or are attending to some other more important task and not giving your demo 100% of their attention aren't likely to know or care if there is another rhythm gtr part or harmony vcl that's not there during your live performance.
as to "live honesty" and integrity....i have to agree that if you're going back and punching in corrections, i'm not sure that is a 100% honest representation of a "live recording".
when PLANET JAZZ recorded our cd we recorded straight up live in the studio. everything but one song was one take. the one we recorded twice....we ended up going w the first take because it had better energy. no punches or corrections. so we felt pretty good about calling it "Live In The Studio".
