george, i hear where you're coming from re. the final cd being an honest to life representation of who is in the band, but i have booked many bands and duos that were not the exact same lineup as was presented on a demo.

yeah...it will always be the same lead vclst because that is a huge part of the "product" you're "selling" but i've never had anyone complain when there is a different saxophonist or a different gtrst on the gig. if there are big changes in the personel lineup i let the folks booking me know that and they've always had enough trust and faith in my integrity to know that i will still be bringing A list players even if it's not the exact same crew.

the VAL & MAL duo thing i do is a good example. i use our video that has just the two of us performing live whenever i can as a booking tool. potential buyers can see and hear exactly what they'll be getting. Val will use that video too, but often she uses her CD that i wasn't involved w in any way. she explains "this is my cd w a full band. mark isn't on this. mark and i perform these tunes in a duo setting". completely honest and straightforward as i see it. they're getting to hear her singing (which is the biggest part of what we do) and get an idea of what kind of material we'll be performing.

and like other's have pointed out above...most people who pop your demo cd while they're stocking the bar, doing paperwork, or are attending to some other more important task and not giving your demo 100% of their attention aren't likely to know or care if there is another rhythm gtr part or harmony vcl that's not there during your live performance.

as to "live honesty" and integrity....i have to agree that if you're going back and punching in corrections, i'm not sure that is a 100% honest representation of a "live recording".
when PLANET JAZZ recorded our cd we recorded straight up live in the studio. everything but one song was one take. the one we recorded twice....we ended up going w the first take because it had better energy. no punches or corrections. so we felt pretty good about calling it "Live In The Studio".

Some people expand the band (i.e. Springsteen), some people strip the arrangement down, some people use backing tracks or technology. I try to go for a middle ground; make the studio recordings sound the best that they can, and play the most important parts live. I would LOVE to have another guitarist in both of my bands but I can't find anyone willing and able.

Ditto that on the vocalist . . .

I have recently discovered that there is no way I can reproduce what I've recorded (in terms of the whole song and every part)...So, If I stand up and do an acoustic verion, it lends to a variation on the same theme so to speak... As was pointed out, nobody is the wiser for it (audience wise)

Hey guys!

I'm Jax the lead singer from Jericho March (George's band) and I am blown away by the amount of feedback you guys have given. Thank you so much. I would first off like to start out by saying that we have a 'mastered' version of the song finished however, we are debating whether or not to go back and add the lead guitar part in other places. There have been effects added to the vocals in the 'currently finished' version which spices it up a bit. I never really thought there was room in the song for much harmony and though I have almost convinced George and the other band members to let me record my own I don't see how much difference it would make on this song. The lead guitar part is played by me and I honestly don't like it at all because I am a rhythm player much more so than I am a lead even though I can play incredible lead for cover songs. (I play lead in my church band) I am grateful for the respects paid to the vocals even though I feel that I am better suited as a backup singer. I'll let you guys vote on that one. We can go in and add some more lead if needed no problem and maybe harmonies depending on how they turn out if all of you think it REALLY will make a difference.

Again, thank you for the feedback and its nice to mixually meet all of you!

Jax

George - Sorry it took me so long to give this a listen, been meaning to and one thing or another...

I vote for harmony vocals too. Everything else is pretty good, as far as a dry track goes. A bit of effects here and there, but I realize that happens later. For now, the vocals need some help. Want me and Shane and Alan to come do something with it? :D I think you know what we could do on a backing vocal track...just kidding of course.

Do some harmony vocals, then do it a second time, makes it sound loads fuller. That's what we did on Southern Cross. It's just us 3, but it sounds like a choir did it. Simply a double harmony track.

Thanks for the feed back all.

I'm leaning towards adding more to the tracks with all this great input.

The boyz and I will have to cuss and discuss it . . .

Again

Thank you for your time and energy.

Don't get bent if you don't like what I did. Its youusse guys fault. You have to give me the best tracks possible if you want really great recordings.
