Over the last few years only one guitarist had caught my ear and that was Tom Morello, but recently I was watching That Metal Show, and John 5 was the guest guitarist, and after listening to him, I realize that rock guitar playing is as vital as it ever was.

Most of the guest players that come on that show are great, but they are one trick ponys, after you hear them wank for a minute or two they really dont have anything else in thier bag of tricks, but John 5 is awesome, every time they let him play, he did something totally diffferent than before.

So any of you jaded rock guitarist looking for someone cool to maybe listen to, check out John 5.

John 5 has been around for such a long time and totally underated. I'm glad he's getting features on That Metal Show.

I'm wondering what's up with the bleach blonde hair and black goatee...or is it the goatee that's dyed???

Anyway, amazing guitarist. I'm not into metal, but saw a blurb about Sammy Hagar being on, and being a long time Hagar fan I managed to remember and check it out for a few minutes last week. Until a few days ago I had only heard the name John 5. Some very interesting licks and tricks, some I've seen, others I haven't and one I think was borrowed from Page.

Impressive though. Very clean and distinct, (not the sound or tone, the playing) great tone, smooth as Van Halen ever was. He's one of those guys like Van Halen and Eric Johnson who can play fast as hell and still make every note clear and distinct, not slurring over anything and depending on distortion to camouflage it. Guess I have to include Malmsteen there, although I don't remember him being quite as distinct as Johnson and Van Halen. John 5 is right there with them and adds a few really cool tricks and wierd sounds. I'm not too interested in hearing much of anything metal, satanic or otherwise, it's just not my thing, but the guy is a very impressive guitar player. I found myself flipping to the show now and then to see if I could catch another of his little solos...

Thanks JW! Dane, sure you can shred on a acoustic. Shredding is a lead technique that doesn't need or require effects. What's hard is shredding on a ukulele.

Yes. Check out Al DiMeola, Paco Delucia, Adrian Legg and the late Micheal Hedges.
