Part of the music culture in Denton originates from the University of North Texas College of Music. The college's Jazz Studies program, established in 1947, was the first of its kind in the United States. Several notable bands and performers have attended the program and signed to major labels, including Roy Orbison, Eli Young Band, Bowling for Soup, Fishboy, Midlake and Neon Indian.

My Nephew was attending there last year. I scoped out the campus myself..Its a great college (UNT)

I was just told this week that a young jazz musician moved to Denton from Chicago knowing of UNT and had ideas of starting or joining a band and playing for a living. After being there awhile he just moved back to Chicago to continue his career as an engineer. Having been to Denton numerous times I have never been impressed with the place. Nice little town square. But I really didn't see a thriving music scene. Things have changed everywhere because of the economy.

But its only a couple of hours from Austin, which has a huge music scene.

I've worked with many North Texas grads on sessions. They set the bar pretty high around here and we are spoiled in Texas with the largest pool of great musicians anywhere in the known Universe. I remember when it was North Texas State University. Their college radio station was KNTS. When they changed their name to University of North Texas, they were actually planning to change the station name to KUNT.

Austin to Denton is easily 3 hours though. I drive everywhere and can testify that Texas probably has the best road system of any place in the world, with the possible exception of Germany. It's soooo much better than anything on the east coast north of the Carolinas. You can drive to where you want to go AND park free on the same property when you get there.
