. FB is starting to be hit by the same type of spammers and viruses that innundated Myspace. FB uses up way too much bandwith, it IS going to start charging for what is now a free service. Then the vast majority of people on there are about themselves. It's nearly 100% personal PR. I've blogged numerous times and mentioned my own website Levitynews.com. A scant few people from FB have linked to my website. I'm seeing what it's becoming and I don't care to participate. I've got a business FB page, it's worthless.

It's one of the primary ways we promote the band and stay in touch with our fans. But I've cut way down on all social media, too damned busy in the summer.

Anytime our band has a gig I send out invites over FB, around 150-200 per gig, I think it works.

Bob, like something said on here recently, if you are gigging then you should be notifying people, not just musicians you know, they are the last people I invite anymore, other than Jimmy! LOL, if you have family friends, professional aquaintances they are great people to invite.

At this point in time, although things do change, (myspace!), its the easiest cheapest way for my to invite people, Im sure some other form will come around soon.

If you come up with a better way to send out invitations and promote ygigs, let us know.
Mailing lists are great - when you can get people to subscribe to them (let alone read the emails) - but they require a person to physically create an email notice and send it out to the list (there are services that will do this for a few $$, which makes sense if you've got the money and a LARGE list).

I have to agree, FB doesn't have the same impact it once had. Many people I know (and this is true for quite a few in general...ala Myspace) used it for a year or so when it was a "new toy", now rarely go on.

Personally, I would keep the FB page as an additional tool to update people but definitely go the old school word of mouth route as far as letting people know you exist. My band is just starting out on the self-promotion route (we're a bit too past it to really push) and have used FB as a starting point but I have noticed...real quick...it is not enough.

As for telling fellow musicians..haha..yep, they are the worst offenders when it comes to ignoring you, very ironic as they will no doubt ask you to check their sh*t out too...I've had practically zero feedback from guys I've played with in the past etc., but I think it's just jealousy as they've done bugger all haha

Ha so right Phil. There are a core group of friends that want to hear about us, then there are those other "friends" who invite you to see their bands but would never check you out. I actually pruned quite a few of these folks last night. Unfriend someone today lol.

Don't unfriend them, file them under "to be sh*t on later!" haha
