As I get older I would hope that the musicians I run into would be satisfied just to Jam or play a small club once a month or so....after all none of us are going to be stars....especially at my age.

Case in point....I went to a rtythm guitar player / lead singer's house to Jam a couple of weeks ago....we had met via BandMix and he had sent me his set list of over 200 songs, most of which I knew and could play without ay problem. I got there and he started to lay out all his rules and regulations, he didn't like guys in his band to drink (though he chain-smoked) and we HAD to work exclusively from his list.

He did a couple of Neil Diamond songs and sounded just like him but on other songs...let me be kind...the ravages of smoking had caught up with him and he strained to hit most high notes. I sang a couple of songs including the Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin", far better than he ever could but at the end he informed me in no uncertain terms that this was also one of "his" songs and he intended to sing it if we formed a band.

He also informed me he wanted a girl singer in the band to sing an occassional song and sing back up. I don't know about you but I have always had poor experiences with females in a band...they rarely do their share, show up the last minute and expect the equiptment to be all set up for them and other assorted problems, I won't go into here. Well, we finished up the night and I left, and he was to send me a cut down list of 15 to 20 songs.

When I didn't hear from him in a week I sen him a follow utp e-mail to which I received no reply and then finally sent him an e-mail stating that althought we fit in very well musically, we didn't when it came to ideas of what a group should be...I wanted a more colaborative effort and he wanted a back up band. So the effort continues to find sane musicians who want to have some fun and play out once in a while. So if you have or know of a group looking for a bass player who can also sing lead and harmony vocals...PLEASE send them my way. Thanks for listening.....

Sounds like someone who fantasized about being someone they can never be. That's usually the ones who end up not contacting you again, even to say it's not for them.

Sorry about that.

Someone laying out rules and regulations BEFORE you even strike a chord? He "owns" Nights In White Satin? HAVE to play songs from his "approved" song list? Hey buddy, see my ass walking out the door? Well I'm "approving" me never coming back over here again. Later...

Hey Gang,

Yeah , usually we see this kinda thing LESS in the 40+ crowd...Yeah , I would been out the door the first sign of that "Things are gonna be my way crap"...Those situations NEVER have snowballs chance...That dickbeater will never have anyone serious about music join his team...If he's 60, ( even 40 really) Im afraid its a lost cause  ...You've been in this long enough to know your better off....

okay, what makes the generation experts on music? Loudness? most are to loud to hear what they are singing. It doesn't matter what age musicians are, it's what they feel that makes music real. All those notes they play. don't they realize that "less is more" A jam session is just that "Jam"

Just tell them you are a realist and that their wild fantasy's have little place in the bigger scheme of things. Then ask them if they would simply like to jam sometime.

Around here pretty much any musician is always welcome to jam. However, I would prefer that they had a"minimal talent restriction" because it's rather irritating when the clueless don't even know when to quit playing when they have never heard a particular song before. But I guess that probably happens everywhere.

If I were a professional, Which I'm not, with all the experience as you Sans, And this guy stared belching smoke and orders, it makes me wonder if it was worth your dignity to have humored him past rule #1. I do drink.I could respect someone's wishes I didn't in his house. On location, well, His rules need not apply. He certainly had an ego issue at hand if you sang N.D. better than him, yet didn't want you to do it. This is why bands don't succeed. You don't have to be a pro to know that. This ended up well in your favor Sans. At the expense of moving equipment, travel, fuel, and time lost. It is cheaper for us to have heard your story and have learned. Thanks, George!

I'm certainly not greatly experienced nor professional as a musician.

But this much I know as a fact.

If you wade into the fray with your mind set on victory or concern of defeat you most certainly will fail.

Being present in the moment is enough ...

Or as Bruce Lee would say.
