So we stuck a mic in front of one of the P.A. bins at rehearsal yesterday to hear what tweaks were needed. We played "Rain" by the Cult. What do you all figure is too loud/quiet on this recording? I'm thinking more kick drum and guitar. Those 2 sound balanced in the intro, but to my ears kind of disappear once the verses start.

I think the guitar is fine the kick drum needs to be a little louder other than that its good. IMO if you turn the guitar up any more it will be to loud for the mix. Its borderline as it is!
Thats what I hear thru these small CHEAP speakers in my office. You guys sound good Dajax wished I lived closer I would def. be a fan.

I'd drag the snare down a touch and bump the cymbals a hair.

More kick is always good in my book. 8)

D, I like the guitar sound, even thou I dont like a chorusy guitar, but that was a key component of the Cults sound. But as always you have nailed the guitar tone. Good Job!

Im listening on my computor speakers so its not the greatest reference, but I would like to hear a thicker kick drum, maybe bring it up some more or boost it in the lower frequencys. A little more hi hat would be nice too.

The bass to me is hard to hear for me, on songs like this I love a big thick bass sound, like say Heartbreaker, Led Zep. So I would bring the bass guitar up some. If you boost the lower end up it might bring it out more, Im sure live you are feeling it. Songs in D are wierd thou, case to my ears the bass does drop out some for some reason. That may be it.

Vocals, your singer has the right tone, but I would suggest if you can to add a slight delay, say 10-20 milliseconds, it will just thicken it up some in my mind. This can also thicken up the guitar, althou in the this case I dont think you need it.

But lets be honest, for a live setup it sounds pretty damn good.

Thanks for sharing and Keep On Rockin!

You and I are on the same page J as far as chorus pedals go...I can't stand them. I hardly ever use a swirly stomp box, and when I HAVE to I much prefer to go to my Univibe, or Phase 90, but this tune seemed to call for the dreaded chorus.

D, I have my chorus pedal wide open and just punch it occasionally to just get a different texture, but in my band 80% of the time Im using straight Les Paul into my mesa in vintage mode, basically going for a JCM 800 base tone on the amp, the mesa is a bit more muddy, so I have to be careful with the mid, for anyone using Mesa's, just back off the mids and it seems to clean it up some.

But D as I said your guitar sounds great on this tune, I mean that sounds like the textures from what I remember of that song.

Thinking more on the bass guitar/drum relationship tonally, maybe go for that old AC/DC sound, I was listening to some stuff of thiers yesterday after listening to this, my heartbreaker reference would be a bit heavy for the guitar part on the cult song, but maybe a AC/DC approach in the bass and drums would fill out the mix more.

When I listen to songs I try to relate them to things Ive heard that I like, and the only way to verbalize that is use some band as a reference, so I hope what Im saying on this makes sense.

But once again, if thats what you guys sound like thru the PA, its pretty damn good, and Im sure plenty of bands that frequent this place would love to have that mix.
