i live here in los angeles,born and raised.we have this radio station called klos that plays the same thing over and over again,stones,stairway,tom petty,etc.in the early 70`s this station was cutting edge and jumped on sabbath,purlple,etc.well now they play the same safe fluffy crap.they became the thing that they were fighting for old and boring.in the early seventies sabb,purple were called rock as the term metal was`nt used yet.as time went on these bands continued to make new music but the radio station would not play them.in essence they (the station)got old.i have a theory about this.i feel that the reason that they will not play rock/metal anymore is because it would deffinitly upstage their morning talk show so they play safe music.when was the last time someone tuned in to a metal station to hear the dj and not the music.please give your thoughts.

I live in Southern Cal so I know the problem you're speaking of. I've given up on mainstream radio a long time ago. At least stations like KROQ does have an avenue for local and indie bands to send in their music. As far as metal, most of the metalheads get their music from online radio stations.

You're right, they only care about their morning show because sponsors pay big money to get advertisement during them. They prob charge enough to where they can play the same old sh*t throughout the day without losing any money. They put all their marketing towards people who will buy advertisement slots, so it isn't about the music anymore.

My friend just released a rock/metal album and his record company focuses all his promotion in Europe which he has gotten the most attention. It's a shame that America won't make a stand for what they enjoy. If people argued more furious for new music as they do their right to have guns, perhaps we can get something going.

Aw come on, really? Not to argue, but... Americans do take a stand for what they enjoy. No? I would like another explanation for rap.

There is ONLY one rule for commercial radio. If it pays it plays. They are listening to the requests of their demographics. If that wasn't the case, the airwaves would be silent, because no one listens to radio as a rule, most listeners download the bulk of their music on MP3 format and listen through their MP3 players or spy phones.

Most of us are playing Fred Flintstones music as far as the radio stations are concerned. They cater to the group that spends the most money. That is the reason you do not hear Jazz, or older real country music, or classical, or any other genre that is absent from radio. Simple as that.

Crest toothpaste killed traditional country music in order to attract teenage girls who would buy white strips. It's just about the money and I don't see that changing anytime soon. It has always been just about the money. No one hires musicians just to give them a break.

And if you are over 30 you are too old, for the most part, to cash in on a big paycheck and a big star spangled career.

I can still find older stuff on AM radio occasionally, but that's about it around here.

Rap sucks, Slacker, that we both agree with. Real rap died with Tupac and Biggie. I do like Eminem, but that's about it. People aren't saying anything, it's just bad, it's lame, just blah!!!!!!

And no, they don't take a stand. Their idea of making a stand is posting it to their status on Facebook sitting on their ass. Slactivism (no pun intended on your name).

I said what the f**k is that gonna do, I wasn't going to buy gas on that day anyway and half of you clowns are unemployed and living with your parents, so really? Wanna impress me? Out here in Nor. Cal, there's only one show and that's on NPR. It's not the best either. There used to be a local band show and a Metal show on a local high school radio station...but it got killed.

Cmon Slacker, do you really believe that a career opportunity is all but over after 30? There's always a gig out there, either with a known band, or you can start one with guys that have been in successful bands. It's been happening a lot lately.

I'm thinking and hoping that there will be a shift in radio soon. I could care less about anything getting too popular though...that's when good music gets trendy. Look at the slew of Metallijocks out there.

Folks I'm listening to two weeks of "Metallica presents the Big 4" which also includes Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. I have a bunch of other stations with different kinds of music including a great country station that plays old stuff and outlaw stuff.

They have a lot of rock stuff but also country, blues, jazz, christian etc. I confess I like a bit of Sinatra once in a while and they have that too. Even opera for my girls.

Satellite radio is the only hope nowdays. Costs me about 100 bucks a year but I spend a lot of time in my car and have heard a lot of great bands that I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. No commercials - I pay up front. Much better than listening to hucksters try to convince you to spend money.

I wasn't referring to bands already established. I see younger guys with old rockers all the time, but just how many of those jobs are there?

Thats too funny. Now that I am aware of Big Brothers unnatural interest in my every movement, I would never take an iphone with me anywhere. Like: "Don't leave home with it"

Now here's an idea. Any of you looked into finding a station that would broadcast your music on satellite radio? There has to be tons of people out there with stations looking for material.

Cool. I don't have a cell phone either. Actually someone gave me one for Christmas, but it is still in the jell pack. Cost too much for monthly fees for someone like me who gets away from the phone because I want to be unreachable and avoid people. I hate tethers.

Embarrassing...I had to borrow a cell for tonight. Time to start using mine.

I love being able to be in contact with my family and friends at a moments notice ... as a warrior I find it logistic bliss.

That being said my average conversation is probably about six words long.

It's a tool to me. Like my gun, my knife, or my truck.
