I find that Niel's stuttering herky jerky style of lead is incredibly expressive. Almost in a David Gilmore aura.
Big Fan and that is maybe my favorite Niel Young/Crazy Horse song. (I've known a whore or two myself )

Neil Young is just a genius songwriter. It's always been such a mystery to me why some can just open up and let their soul shine like Neil does.
Really he's one of my all time favorites.

I've often thought about doing a 3 way tribute show of Neil Young, James Taylor and Jackson Brown....

I can't speak for Niel, but for me it's not easy. In fact it's very uncomfortable.
Maybe in a concert setting with people that are there just to see and hear me because they're familiar with my songs, it would be better.
In fact I'm sure it would. But I haven't had that luxury yet; all of my performances of my current material have been to audiences there for other things, or unfamiliar with my work. Other than the few fans I drew @ Fund in the Sun.

I did a 20 minute set before a play on 3 consecutive nights and I gotta tell ya it was hell. I got great response and a lil praise after the first night, but it was still hell the 2nd night and the 3rd.
Maybe it's my way of talking about things that are hard to talk about?
