So what do we call todays mainstream country? How about Neufchatel? You know, not just cheese but light cheese. To my ear it's got no mojo, no cahones, no life and no artistry. Those recordings are put together like a spreadsheet and I get a little dumber every time I hear one.

That's not to say there aren't a lot of people who like it and they aren't wrong for liking it. It is carefully crafted for a certain demographic and does a good job of appealing to them.

This has nothing to do with technology.

Disclaimer: These are just one mans opinion.

That is true Jon, But the man in black was one of them. Wrote all his own material, Not the greatest vocalist, An artist for the people,That they could relate to. Johnny Cash! Came from nowhere & became one of the most beloved artist in country music history. Knew who he was and at the same time. Was always himself 'The man in Black' (Johnny Cash).

Don't get me wrong. I love Johnny Cash. He was the real deal. He just never killed anyone and only went to jail overnight a few times for various misdemeanors. Doesn't take away from anything he did or wrote though. I had the good fortune to meet him briefly in the early eighties. True to form on an early Tuesday afternoon he was dressed completely in black :)

He did spend time making music in prison, though.
I saw an interview he did, which mentioned a 'prison concert' he did.
He was talking about the antagonostic audience (before the show) with their glares and crossed arms, and their "Who-the-hell-are-you-and-why-the f***-should I give a s*** about you?" attitudes.
His band mates were scared, uh, poopless. :)
Not his exact words, but he was thinking that, maybe playing for that particular crowd wasn't such a good idea.
These guys had killed people, and they looked like they were getting ready to kill again . . .
But - by the 2nd song or so, this crowd of battle-hardened killers was transforming into a different crowd.
. . . and completely into the messages and the music. Some with wistful looks, some lauging, some wiping their eyes . . .
. . . they knew Johnny was for real . . . and he touched their heart-strings.
Plastic - people can't write that stuff very well.
I don't know how many artists can do that nowadays . . . .

I live here in the ozark's and I like all kind of music besides rap,but to each his own, sorry I went off somewhere there, I play the bar circuit here.if we play the good traditional country we can't get many gigs.here the general population wants the new country so we play what they want or we don't play.I thought I would say something as I live here in redneck heaven. I live on a dirt road back in the woods so I can relate to this subject.most of the new country live in the city, never used a wood stove etc. but this is how my family and I live .we don't cut wood we
freeze in the winter etc. thanks for listening to my rambling....

The bars want some Merle, Johnny Cash Hank Jr.,Skynyrd & a lot of Southern rock-n-Roll ,and a lot of To Step.We did a benefit this past july in Dyess Ark.(johnny Cash's)home town for a new Cash musem. We played with some other bands but had fun playing with Gene Watson, (also his hometown ),& Mickey Gilly, one other band tried old Hank etc.lost most of their crowd. We opened the show, had them dancing all the time.I agree though the music today is not true blue collar country that I grew up on.I'm 56 yrs. old so I know something about what I say.....

You know what? That album Live at San Quentin is very likely one of the best ones ever made. I'd say required listening to anyone who is shaping themselves as a singer-songwriter.

No offense intented with my remark. I was under the same impression for a time. When you hear Folsom it sounds like it sounds very personal. I was pretty suprised to find out he wasn't an ex con/killer.
