Zip,
It was cooking oil that had caught fire. I should have wet a towel and laid it over the pan, but the flames were up to the ceiling, and black smoke made it hard to see, and I didn't think I had time to find a towel and wet it. Plus, the back door was right off the kitchen, so it seemed best to me, to be REAAAAALLY careful and walk the pan outside. But when I yelled to my step son to open the door, he opened the front door instead of the back door, and that delay, made me sit the pan down on the counter, so I could open the door myself. When I picked it back up, I slipped on some oil that had already bubbled over, and it tilted the pan enough to pour the flaming oil all over my hands.
Chippy, thanks brother!
