If ignorance is bliss, then briiliance is pain.

I do best when Im unders lots of pressure and I got nothin.
I obsess and stress about it for a day or two, then I'll wake up in the middle of the night with the whole thing layed out in my head

I've kinda noticed that with a lot of bands, after they "make it" and life is all good, their material starts to get weak and emotionless. Take Aerosmith for instance!
Yes I think that though not always, pain can be one of the best sources of inspiration... it always has been for me.

I seem to be able to find lyrics at will. I do get stuck on finding a different way of saying I Love you or I hate you within a song. Emotionaly I take advantage of every mood and just write the emotion out. Feel good nice song Feel bad rough song. Useing your emotions in finding melodies and specific sounding chords and tempos works too. A trick if you will for me is to blank your mind out and force yourself to put combinations of chords and tempo paterns together that you have never done before. Make yourself go where you have never been before. You can even listen to some music that you dislike and just pull something from it. A three chord pattern to build on or a specific sound within the music that catches you. It may be a couple of words and the way the singer translates them in the song with his particular voice. If you are really useing the artistic side of your brain you will be able to hear, see, and feel inspiration all around you in everything. But it is hard to develope an on and off switch for your creativity. The world we live in can be so regimented. When I catch an idea I will obcess on it. It will absolutely take me over until I finish the song. I sing it at work, I sing while driveing, I sing it in my head actualy while I am talking to someone else. It sounds a little sychotic but I am able to turn off the filters and distractions and build the song in my head all day long. When I am finished I don't want much to do with it anymore except maybe recording. I'm on to the next high or song. I believe if I had the resorces I would lock myself in a room with some chosen equipment for one month and binge write. THAT WOULD MAKE ME VERY HAPPY.

My best work seems to come to me when I am totally exhausted both physically and emotionally.
Though I have awakened with a song in my head, or been driving to work early in the morning have a song pop in, pull off the road, and write it on scrap paper off the floor board of my Jeep.
A good excuse to never clean out my Jeep.

That is a firmiliar story for writers. Wakeing up in the night with a song or having a song pop in at a certain moment. For a writer it is very impotant to always have a small note pad next to your bed and with you at all times. It will become invaluable.

Even the concept one writes in the middle of the night is something to be reworked into a tune.

Musically, I tend to write best when erm "under the influence".

Lyrically, the best stuff does come from personal pain.

The problem is that some of it gets VERY personal and you tend to tell a story to your band mates that maybe they don't even know, let alone others.

(sometimes you can write too much in a lyric)

Whenever I go through a series of painful trials, I reflect on what I've gone through. So the pen tends to be theraputic.I just jot down little bundles of words in my notebook, then piece all the words together later on and then look for music that will fit the mood.

So I say that pain is definitely a great inspiration for me.
