I'll chime in here on this one.
IMO an accomplished bassist uses his/her fingers. I say this because it is a technique that is difficult to master. It also allows the player more diversity and a greateer sense of "feel" to come through in the playing. You can't strike two+ notes/strings in unison with a pick.
IMO it just makes for a better all around player and another tool the player can use to his/her benfit.
Learn it all.
