Observation. the same way its happened multiple times over the last years. When an account gets deleted, all their posts disappear, and it leaves the thread looking like the first respondee started it (except when you look at the listing on the header page). If, however, someone 'quoted' any posts from the now-deleted person, those still show in the quote.
