I hate to spoil it for everyone but one reason Hitler became popular in Germany is because the various communist groups were going wild in the streets and people were fed up with it. Much like American cops, the German Polizei did bugger all. The Nazis responded with their sturmabteilungen and won the battle for the boulevards.

It was certainly a lose / lose situation because whoever won, the decent people lost. And now the communists are at it again. And once again, the cops are asleep at the wheel. Gee, what could go wrong?

I certainly think it is well overdue to avoid the Hitler cliches given that as a mass murderer he was something of a piker compared to Stalin and Mao. But of course, they were popular in the NY Times and more recently the public schools...where it is a terrible crime to admit that "Nazi" was just a more efficient breed of socialist - as in "National Socialist German Worker's Party."
