Unbalanced Trump

from conservative columnist David Brooks....

Over the past few days, Trump has destroyed this middle ground. He’s exposed the wet noodle Republicans as suckers, or worse. Trump has shown that he is not a normal candidate. He is a political rampage charging ever more wildly out of control. And no, he cannot be changed.

He cannot be contained because he is psychologically off the chain. With each passing week he displays the classic symptoms of medium-grade mania in more disturbing forms: inflated self-esteem, sleeplessness, impulsivity, aggression and a compulsion to offer advice on subjects he knows nothing about.

His speech patterns are like something straight out of a psychiatric textbook. Manics display something called “flight of ideas.” It’s a formal thought disorder in which ideas tumble forth through a disordered chain of associations. One word sparks another, which sparks another, and they’re off to the races. As one trained psychiatrist said to me, compare Donald Trump’s speaking patterns to a Robin Williams monologue, but with insults instead of jokes.

Trump insults Paul Ryan, undermines NATO and raises the specter of nuclear war. Advisers can’t control Trump’s brain because Trump can’t control it himself.

He also cannot be contained because he lacks the inner equipment that makes decent behavior possible. So many of our daily social interactions depend on a basic capacity for empathy. But Trump displays an absence of this quality.

He looks at the grieving mother of a war hero and is unable to recognize her pain. He hears a crying baby and is unable to recognize the infant’s emotion or the mother’s discomfort. He is told of women being sexually harassed at Fox News and is unable to recognize their trauma.

The same blindness that makes him impervious to global outrage makes it impossible for him to make empathetic connection. Fear is his only bond.

Some people compare Trump to the great authoritarians of history, but that’s wrong. They were generally disciplined men with grandiose plans. Trump is underdeveloped and unregulated.

He is a slave to his own pride, compelled by a childlike impulse to lash out at anything that threatens his fragile identity. He appears to have no ability to experience reverence, which is the foundation for any capacity to admire or serve anything bigger than self, to want to learn about anything beyond self, to want to know and deeply honor the people around you.

Republicans are not going to be able to help the 70-year-old man-child grow up over the next few months. Nor are they going to be able to get him to withdraw from the race. A guy who can raise $82 million mostly in small donations has a passionate niche following.

But they can at least get out of the enabling business. First, they can acknowledge that they are being sucked down a nihilistic whirlpool. Second, they can acknowledge the long-term damage being done to the country and to themselves.

I agree with that entire article.

He's still overwhelmingly better and more qualified than his opponent. What a shame we have to choose between these two.

What is beyond the pale is the hypocrisy coming from the Left because Hillary is only better at deception and lying. And the blatant bias of mainstream media is so far beyond criminal. They editorialize and make excuses for every scandal coming from Hillary, while misdirecting with mostly false narratives about Trump.

Shame on them all.

Dang, Jimmy. You just lost all credibility and any semblance of objectivity when you added "in history". Really? Sure you don't want to walk that one back a little?

Because that would mean lying, murder, and incompetence are "qualifying" for you. In that case, I think Nero may have been more qualified. Not by much, though... :(

Does it not matter to you that she started covert wars to topple the regimes of Gaddafi, Assad, and Mubarak? Most troubling to me is the way the State Department used it's power and influence to put the Muslim Brotherhood into power in Egypt. Then, of course, most impressive was the way millions of Egyptians went into the streets to get their country back. They no longer trust the USA to be their friends. Does that matter to you?

They double-crossed the people of Honduras in 2009 in a way that every American ought to be ashamed of. Al Queda has been running Libya since they overthrew the feeble force the she, Ms Hillary Clinton, let die in Benghazi.

This person is who you say is the most qualified in history? Dude, it just ain't so and you know it.

Thanks for all your CORRECT diagnosis of jimmy's trash talk.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Mccain and Romney suddenly sold out. I don't know why.

Neither of them were rockstars. It didn't matter...

I was hoping no one would take this bait from mark. YA DID.

This has all come down to who is the bigger rockstar. It is sad when the very nature and fundamentals of America as a nation will come down to who is the bigger rockstar.

F U mark.

Ya know the really really sad thing? It doesn't matter much.

Most of my kids are grown but I have a 14 year old son still at home and I'm afraid that I need to train this one for war. Either way.

America is sliding off the rails, as we will all see from Nov to Jan. Then everyone will know who the fools were, but it will be too late....and the liars will just double-down anyway.

I think the attraction to a "shoot from the lip" populist like Trump is that the average Joe see someone who is unhappy with the way things have been going in America, and can verbalize some of Joe's anger. The biggest concern Trump should have is his security when running against these people. They will stoop at nothing, and have no problem doing it in the open now.

With Hillary, most Americans resent being lied to so many times when the truth is obvious. Trump is still a roll of the dice, instead of Roulette with a rusty Derringer. Either candidate is precariously dangerous. One is certain death and the other is unstable enough to go either way.

I'll have to take that chance. And as always again....assuming there is an election.
