The claim that the vast wave of migrants overwhelming Europe is largely made up of Syrian refugees is, in the words of one lawmaker, a “lie.”
The European Union recently announced that of 213,000 arrivals in April, May and June, only 44,000 — just over 20% — are from Syria. By contrast, the United Nations has estimated more than a million refugees are fleeing Syria.
“This exposes the lie peddled in some quarters that vast numbers of those reaching Europe are from Syria,” said David Davies, a British Conservative Party Member of Parliament from Monmouth.
Also yesterday, a German finance ministry spokesman reported that Bulgarian police seized “boxes” of fake Syrian passports. The Clarion Project, which said 10,000 passports had been seized, reported that passports are selling for $1,500 apiece.
“Refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan want to become Syrian in order to secure their recognition as asylum seekers in Western Europe,” reported Germany’s Tagespiegel.
The facts demolish arguments that the Syrian crisis is behind the refugee flood, and that countries have an obligation to respond, said another lawmaker.

“The whole argument has been made that this influx is all real refugees from Syria whereas this adds to the substantial evidence that there are a large number of economic migrants who are aiming for a better life,” said Sir Bill Cash.
The revelation that the refugee flood does not stem from the Syrian conflict comes as the Obama administration has announced it will increase the number of refugees the United States accepts each year until it reaches to 100,000 by 2017, a major increase from the current level of 70,000.
That was not enough for some who want more alleged Syrian refugees shipped to America.
“This kind of piecemeal, incremental approach is simply not enough to effectively address this crisis,” said Eleanor Acer, director of the refugee protection program at Human Rights First, an advocacy group that has been pressing the United States to take 100,000 Syrians alone next year.
Closer to home, a strong pushback has emerged against increasing the numbers of Syrian refugees in the wake of reports that ISIS and other terrorist organizations are using the crisis as a way to infiltrate the West.
ISIS and other terrorist organizations “have made it abundantly clear that they will use the refugee crisis to try to enter the United States. Now the Obama administration wants to bring in an additional 10,000 Syrians without a concrete and foolproof plan to ensure that terrorists won’t be able to enter the country,” said U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and U.S. Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va.
“The administration has essentially given the American people a ‘trust me.’ That isn’t good enough,” said their statement.
