The Honolulu police department recently made a change in the brand of firearm issued to its officers, but the new policy has led to an act of “anti-gun stupidity” that has taxpayers aghast at the massive waste of tax dollars.
The Honolulu police department had 2,300 Smith & Wesson, 9MM handguns in its arsenal, but the department decided to change over to the lighter, cheaper, easier to care for Glock 17.
Usually a department faced with such a policy change will either give its arsenal to a smaller department that might need the help or auction off the guns to law-abiding gun owners in the public, thereby helping to defray costs for the new firearms and save taxpayers some cash.
Many hundreds of the Smith & Wesson handguns in the Honolulu arsenal were still brand new in unopened boxes; but instead of following the budget-conscious and responsible practice of nearly every police agency in the U.S. and donating them or auctioning them off to the public, the Honolulu police department actually destroyed the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of perfectly functioning and safe firearms.
The city’s mayor puffed up his decision as an act of “public safety.”

“Mayor Kirk Caldwell and the Honolulu Police Department agreed that they would not allow the guns to be sold to the general public and end up on the streets of Honolulu,” Honolulu Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said. “The same goes for selling the individual gun parts that could have been used to assemble a gun.”
Properly selling the unwanted firearms could have brought in proceeds of nearly $580,000; but it was not to be as all the arms were destroyed.
The mayor even refused to allow the city to sell the guns to its own officers.
Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, called the move wasteful and said it was “the height of anti-gun stupidity and will not stop one criminal from getting a weapon.”
“These guns in the hands of lawful civilians could provide an important means of self-defense, especially for low income people who can’t afford them,” Gottlieb told the media. “Or the sale of them could help pay for much needed law enforcement equipment to help keep the public safe.”
Many Hawaiians also criticized the waste of over half a million dollars worth of firearms.
The Hawaii Rifle Association’s president, Harvey Gerwig, sent a letter to Mayor Caldwell decrying the waste and pointing out that the move was also spiteful of law-abiding gun owners.
“The reason your office and HPD gave for not selling to the public seemed to be a slight on those legal gun owners who would have purchased them and who supported you during your election,” Gerwig’s letter read. “You should be ashamed for suggesting that the good citizens of Hawaii cannot be trusted with buying HPD’s surplus guns for fear of them falling into criminal hands when record numbers of firearms have been bought by those same citizens for the last ten years without any such problems.”
