possibly so.

yeah, he was remarkably inconsistent...almost one extreme to another. like you said...when he was on.....

and man, when he didn't look totally fugged up...how cool did he look w a F-bird? (or one of his National reso's?)

and the other side of the coin of that for me was how UNCOOL he looked when he was playing that goofy looking headlesss gtr like thing (a "Razor"???)

i mean, how do you go from playing F-Birds to that deal????

Rick Derringer blamed the inconsistency in playing ability on his albino eyes which could not focus well instantly as required when playing fast, if you can't see the fretboard it causes problems..

Thanks very much PG. I quite appreciate it and have already sent a copy to my brother.

I know what you mean about that cheesy looking thing - called a Steinberg, Steinberger or some such. i read that he got that so he could play it on the tour bus - the Bird is a pretty big guitar.

As my singer friend told me while strumming her Ibanez - "How come this one doesn't make those sounds you get out of yours? That sustain?"

Well...because it ain't a Firebird!

It's an Erlewine Lazer. Designed and built in Austin by Mark Erlewine, who still works in the shop and does all repairs.

Johnny played it because it had the feel of a Gibson and the sound of a Strat, as close as he could find.
