According to Australian intelligence, Islamic State is in possession of enough radioactive material to build a large and devastating dirty bomb. The radioactive material was probably seized in Syria and Iraq.
There have been reports about ISIS’ digging at the site that once housed the Syrian nuclear reactor in Deir a-Zur. This secret Syrian nuclear reactor at Al-Kibar in Deir a-Zur was destroyed in 2007 by the Israeli Air Force in a spectacular raid that was called Mivtza Bustan (Operation Orchard).
Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered the strike after it became clear that the U.S. government was not willing to act militarily after Israeli Intelligence delivered evidence Assad was running a covert nuclear program in Al-Kibar. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed almost five years later that the Israeli Intelligence reports had been correct and that al-Kibar housed a nuclear facility. The CIA later said that the facility was built for military purposes.
On June 1st, Front Page Magazine reported that residents of Deir a-Zur had seen that members of ISIS were excavating the destroyed nuclear facility, and that they had noticed many empty barrels that reportedly contained radioactive material.

The source of the Front Page Magazine report was a Facebook post by a Syrian resident of Deir-a-Zur.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in an interview with The Australian that NATO is deeply concerned about the nuclear materials seized by Islamic State. She was talking about materials that ISIS seized during raids at research centers and from hospitals.
The Australian intelligence led to a meeting of the so-called Australia Group in the city of Perth last week. The Australia Group is a block of 40 nations dedicated to end the use of weapons of mass destruction such as biological and chemical weapons.
The British paper The Independent reported yesterday that experts fear that ISIS will develop a WMD to use it at the start of Ramadan or the anniversary of its declaration of the Islamic Caliphate on June 29th.
The growing concerns about ISIS’ development of weapons of mass destruction come at a time when experts fear the militant group will be more active than ever in marking the start of Ramadan and the one-year anniversary of its declaration of a caliphate.
The US-based Institute for the Study of War has noted that the group usually reserves its major operations to coincide with the Islamic holy month. Isis is likely to begin and end Ramadan with attempted spectacular military offensive actions in Iraq and Syria, The Independent reported.
As Western Journalism reported on May 26th, Islamic State recently announced in its online magazine Dabiq that it could purchase a nuclear weapon from Pakistan, and that the United States would be targeted with the weapon.
The Islamic State makes no secret of the fact they have every intention of attacking America on its home soil and they’re not going to mince about with two muja-hidi-n taking down a dozen casualties if it originates from the Caliphate, the article in Dabiq said. They’ll be looking to do something big, something that would make any past operation look like a squirrel shoot, and the more groups that pledge allegiance, the more possible it becomes to pull off something truly epic.
The news about Islamic State’s possession of nuclear materials comes at a time when the group continues to expand its activities across The Middle East. The Telegraph in the UK today published an article about five key ISIS moments in the last year. The article shows that Islamic State doesn’t hesitate to commit genocide if it thinks it will serve its stated goal of expanding the Caliphate until Islam rules the world.
In May, Kurdish authorities in Iraq reported that they had evidence Islamic State used chlorine against Kurds during a terror attack in January this year. Soil and clothing samples taken after the attack contained a weaponized form of chlorine, the Security Council of the Iraqi Kurdish Region reported.
In related news, the media reported that the U.S. administration is planning to deploy more troops in Iraq to train Iraqi forces. A new base will be established near Habbaniya that is located 20 miles from the city of Ramadi, which was captured by Islamic State at the end of May.
We are looking at it closely, a U.S. official told the Washington Post. We need to firm up our presence out there. There’s been a debate about getting a site in the eastern part of Anbar for some time. Iraqis had asked for it. Ramadi forced the issue.
