But He took our sins upon himself. To quote a favorite Leonard Cohen tune:
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
It's a long hard road brother, but worth the trip.

I'm not into Leonard Cohen much.
I was speaking of the nature of man, and without Christ that nature remains unchanged. In fact, even with Christ that nature remains unchanged. To the point, the blood of Christ covers our sins but it does not change our condition. So although he took our sins upon himself, he did not change our nature. If that were not so, Christians would no linger sin in any respect after accepting the sacrifice of Christ. At least that is my understanding. For we are but sinners saved by grace. Even though, we shall be like him when we see him. At that time the nature of man shall be changed, but until then, we still need to confess our sins for forgiveness, right? So in that we are the corrupted being made holy through the blood of Christ. Our carnal nature fights with us daily, for we still battle the desires of the flesh. We, as believers shall always be works in progress until the end. I would go so far as to say that any righteousness apart from, inspired by Christ is still as filthy rags.
It is a long haul as you say, but the rewards are well worth it.
