I thought the beef with the Europussies was that they authorize a pipeline from Russia that provides 40% of their oil needs, giving Russia huge geopolitical leverage and then they want us to pay most of the freight to defend them from this same country that they are economically in bed with whilst bad-mouthing us. Trump, of course, did not put it quite that eloquently.

According to two German generals who headed up Army High Command (OKH) at different times, the war was lost in front of Moscow in 1941 with or without the US. They would never be as strong again and it was just a matter of time. Those Generals were Halder and "Fast Heinz" Guderian, the premier tank general in the world at that time.

When we invaded Normandy the Russian Army had already inflicted 6 million casualties on the Germans. While we were fighting our way into France they eliminated another 900 thousand by running over Army Group Center.

We'd never have gotten past the beaches if the hundreds of destroyed or depleted German divisions had been available.

They were poised to take Berlin in January '45 but luckily for the Germans Stalin wanted to gobble up the Balkans first.

On the other hand, our terror bomber raids tied up literally thousands of personal and deadly 88mm Flak pieces which could possibly have stopped the waves of Russian tanks that finally rolled to Berlin. Our invasion of Sicily, almost by accident was a strategic success because Hitler used it as an excuse to pull the SS Panzer Divisions out of the Kursk battle when they had just about defeated the Soviet Fifth Tank Army. The Normandy and Southern France invasions did tie up troops badly needed in Russia and Hitler threw away most of his late war tank production trying to stop us. After we finally stopped them at the Ardennes the Soviets were rolling through Hungary, source of Hitler's last oil reserves. He diverted 6th SS Panzer Army to the east but they were too depleted to do much. Our tanks then over ran western Germany.

We supplied the Russians with massive amounts of aide, mostly on the logistical sides: telephone wire, radios, boot leather, trucks, jeeps, half tracks and so on. This stuff was vital but not game changing. They thought our tanks were a bit limp but liked how well they ran. They laughed out loud at the British tanks. (as did the Germans)

In the end, the Soviets suffered somewhere between 20 and 30 million deaths in that war. We had roughly 300-350 thousand fighting the German War.

So now, when he says it has never been worse (we do seem to be on opposite sides of a hot proxy war in Syria, fyi) suddenly, it has been worse.
