I'm all for requiring a person to

1. Pass a mental stability test
2. Pass a class on basic safety procedures
3. Have no criminal record
4. Renew every 5 years
5. Have a bio-metric gun safe for more than 3 weapons
6. Be a registered voter and naturalized citizen

MOST gun owners (that are recorded) in America are law abiding citizens. Infringing on their rights will only cause mistrust. The problem with the political climate is that we're tired of being lectured to by dishonorable people. When you believe that the life of a precious innocent child has value, we'll believe you when you act like you care about the lives of students.

When you require people to register with an ID to vote, we'd be more likely to trust the motivation behind requiring gun owners to register.

The hypocrisy of using an event like this for limiting legal gun ownership, while ignoring the gun crimes in Chicago every day doesn't promote any confidence or trust.

In other words, if you really want to reduce gun-related crime, start arresting every criminal who has a gun. Go into the gang wars of Chicago, Baltimore, St Louis and get rid of the crooks so people don't feel the need for providing their own security.

It would be a good start for an honest debate. Then we need to see the laws going through Congressional representatives we elected, instead of another "end-around" to produce law through other means. That would be a long slow process, but it would be clean law at the end of it.

Until that happens, I'd fight any restriction tooth-and-nail though I don't own a gun at all.

Anyone who doesn't vote has surrendered their right to influence gun policy for the rest of us.

People who don't vote don't really care about the political state of America, and only those who are willing to fight for the right to be American should own a weapon.

Ted, it's good to see that you acknowledge some additional controls are needed. However, the premise that gang violence in the major cities accounts for most of the gun crime is faulty. The people who are committing these mass shootings are mentally ill people who are not parts of gangs but everyday citizens who got their guns legally. That is the problem we must focus on, and stop talking about inner city violence. There has always been violence there and there always will be. Let's try to stop the violence we can stop. Prevent people with mental conditions from getting guns with stringent background checks.

If the government is going to claim that ANY laws are going to make us more secure, then they need to enforce existing gun laws fairly. They need to show that they are honestly concerned about the security of all Americans, by vigorously confronting the criminals who use illegal guns daily.

Until the violent gun owners and illegal gun owners are made to surrender their weapons, it would unfair and unwise for anyone else to.


And it doesn't help that Obama won't call any muslim a terrorist but they list Christian groups who have a political disagreement high on the list. Face it....NO ONE trusts Obama with a decision of Constitutional impact.
